Going where no Hosta has gone before, the Hosta Captain Kirk (Hosta 'Captain Kirk') is a notable, improved sport of the very popular Gold Standard Hosta and more sun-tolerant than others. The leaves have bright gold centers that contrast nicely against the dark green margins! As you can imagine, the contrast is truly stunning!

Each 3-foot wide clump is topped with lavender flowers in mid-summer. The thick, waxy leaves resist slugs. This glowing two-toned beauty is a robust grower, has a neat appearance, and puts on a star performance! The blooms attract many winged nectar-seeking visitors to your garden and blooms for your bouquets!

Cold and heat-tolerant, and even humidity-tolerant, Hostas handle a wide range of conditions throughout USDA growing zones 3 to 9. Growing 16-18 inches in height and 2-3 feet in width at maturity and are incredibly easy to grow for gardeners of all levels.

Planting and Application:

Captain Kirk looks great throughout the dappled shade garden and basks beneath the canopy of large trees and shrubs. Lighting up the gloom, use this hardy Hosta as edging and facer plants to gracefully ease the transition between lawn and garden! Skirt the leggy, bare bottom stems of larger older plants with a ring of these two-tone ornamental foliage plants!

Create a shade garden that's out of this world by combining Captain Kirk with other shade-loving plants and perennials! Or go all out with a Sci-Fi filled Hosta collection by combining the Captain with Vulcan Hostas and the big bold leaves of Celestial Hosta. Create groupings and rows of these vivid plants to add color to the gloom. This is most at home in shady, woodland settings and often works well in containers!

  • Yellow Leaves with Green Margins
  • Lavender Flowers in Summer
  • Nectar-Rich For Pollinators & Hummingbirds
  • Thick Waxy Foliage & Fountain-Shaped Form
  • Containers & Specimens, Edging, Beds & Border Accents

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Captain Kirk is much more sun tolerant than other Hostas! Plant where they can get morning sun to bring the rich golden color out, but too much sun will burn the leaves. Plant in full shade in most growing zones, but in the coolest zones they can handle dappled shade. It grows best in moist, well-drained, highly organic soils with a pH between 5.5 and 7.5. Sandy loam is better than clay because it provides more aeration for the roots. Provide these herbaceous Perennials with regular watering for best results in an enriched site with good amounts of organic matter.

A generous 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch chips helps retain soil moisture as well as insulate the root system from heat and chill. Low care and easy maintenance, remove the dead leaves after frost for a clean winter appearance and to prevent any possible fungal or slug issues from wintering over. Deadhead Hostas as soon as the flowers fade for a tidy look, and in fall when these herbaceous Perennials die back from the cold, it's time to prune the mound clean and remove the dead foliage. Divide your Hosta every 3-5 years to maintain vigor.

  • More Sun Tolerant Than Other Hostas - Partial Shade & Full Shade
  • Moist Well-Drained Soil
  • Deadhead After Bloom & Prune Late Autumn
  • Easy-Care Perennial for New Gardeners
  • Slug Resistant Foliage

To the stars and beyond, the Captain Kirk Hosta takes your landscape beyond with its color and ease of care! Reserve yours today at Nature Hills as soon as you see it in stock!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Hostas need full sun or shade?

Hosta does best in full sun in cooler climates but does appreciate afternoon protection from the worst of the summer sun, especially in the hottest of their growing zone range. In the hottest climates, Hosta like partial shade or dappled shade, and some varieties will do great in full shade.

Where do Hostas grow best?

Hosta plants love enriched, well-drained soil that is moderately yet consistently moist throughout the growing season. They appreciate mulched garden beds.

Do Hostas come back every year? Are Hostas a perennial plant?

With vigorous carefree growth, Hostas are herbaceous perennial plants that will return year after year with little maintenance.

What do you do with Hostas in the fall? What do you do with Hostas in the winter?

Hosta leaves will die back after frost but the crowns and roots remain intact and dormant until next spring. Prune back the leaves once they turn brown in the autumn and remove them from the plant's area. For winter protection, add a layer of compost or mulch over the crowns to protect them from the chill.

Do Hosta attract hummingbirds or pollinators?

Hostas are loved by pollinators and hummingbirds! All walks of beneficial pollinators will show up to sip their nectar.
