It's difficult to accurately describe the true majesty of the Lord Baltimore Hardy Hibiscus (Hibiscus x 'Lord Baltimore'). Each huge blossom features a bold shade of crimson, with the flowers reaching up to 10 inches across! The blooms consist of 5 silken petals with a textured appearance and uneven edges for a slightly ruffled effect.
A long stamen with yellow highlights protrudes from the center of each bloom, an added accent to further draw the eye. Imagine a profuse bloom of these magnificent flowers in your yard from July until frost! Hummingbirds and butterflies adore these flowers!
Each Lord Baltimore flower lasts for about a day, with new blooms immediately opening up to replace the last. However, even when the blooms are sparse, the foliage maintains interest. The green leaves are reminiscent of maple leaves, deeply lobed and with a glossy sheen. Growth starts slow in the spring but then takes off, growing fast and blooming for quick results.
Your Lord Baltimore Hardy Hibiscus is a herbaceous perennial that is very fast-growing with an upright nature, thriving throughout USDA growing zones 4 to 9 and growing into an upright 6-8 feet in height when in bloom and spreading 3-4 feet in width.
Planting and Application:
You could plant a few Lord Baltimore as a decorative border or hedge, or use just one for a bright accent backdrop! Add a single specimen as a bright focal point and groupings of them add drama amid less brilliant plantings!
Cottage Gardens, Pollinator Gardens, around the Patio and seating areas also provide a lovely setting for your Lord Baltimore! Butterflies and bees will love your Lord Baltimore Hibiscus, but deer will tend to pass it by in favor of tastier treats. Mix with the brilliant red Lady Baltimore Hardy Hibiscus and create seasonal hedges and screenings around the pool or backyard fire pits to add brilliant blooms and lush greenery to your outdoor garden rooms.
Coastal gardeners won't need to worry either, and these salt-tolerant perennials thrive along salted streets or sidewalks too! Rain Gardens are another chance to make the most of the power of these plants due to their tolerance of moist soil. Use several in a mass planting on the berm to help control erosion and filter water runoff.

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Lord Baltimore Hardy Hibiscus tolerates light shade and wet soils, so may do well in some of the low areas of your yard. Their adaptability to occasionally wet and dry soils is incredible, but they do best with consistent watering and will keep your plant stress-free. Apply a 3-4 inch layer of mulch over the top of the roots, pulling them back away from the roots.
As flowers are done, remove them for a more manicured look, then in early spring, trim down all the stems to the ground. Watch for the new growth to come up from the roots. Please be patient, as they are one of the last plants to start growing in spring.
- Full Sun Hardy Perennials
- Adaptable Moisture Needs
- Well-Drained Soil
- Deadhead After Flowers Fade & Prune Early Spring
- Cold-Hardy & Heat-Tolerant
Nothing has tropical appeal in a non-tropical setting like a Hardy Hibiscus, and Lord Baltimore is a stellar example of a way to bring those large, brilliant flowers to your home this year! Order yours today at Nature Hills!
