Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Delivery and Shipping

Shipping

To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Once your order is placed, you will also receive the specific shipment time-frame information as part of your order confirmation. Once an item ships, you will receive shipment notification and tracking numbers, so you can follow along while your plant travels to your doorstep. We use FedEx, UPS, or USPS at our discretion.

Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

*If you have found your zone already, it will be highlighted in the table below.

Big blue mophead blooms, HI™ River Bigleaf Hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla 'River') is an incredibly compact shrub with dense flower clusters in the most beautiful sky blue in acidic soil! Backed by dense textured foliage with toothy edges, these are gorgeous landscaping specimen plants!

These compact deciduous shrubs are heat and humidity tolerant in growing zones 6 through 9, handling some sun, but preferring part shade and afternoon shade best. Maturing into a tall oval form 4-5 feet high and 3-5 feet wide, these can be pruned smaller to accommodate any sized yard, hedge or planter!

HI™ River can change color in alkaline soil, turning more purple or pink, so be sure to keep the alkalinity in check for the clearest blue blossoms! Add acid-loving plant fertilizer, peat moss or aluminum sulfate to your soil to lower the pH.

Planting and Application:

HI™ River is a fantastic size for a hedge for privacy and screening! Create rows for a neighbor-friendly fence and really highlight a white picket fence. Give your home that Nantucket garden feel by adding these big blue pompoms to your perennial, mixed-shrub or cottage bed or border!

Bigleaf Hydrangea does great in warmer climates and even containerize very well where there is a reduced chance of a hard freeze. Pot up these as specimens and focal points on porches and patios for gorgeous decorations. Be sure to plant a few extras for your pollinators and to ensure you’ll have extra to not only snip a few for floral bouquets but to leave on the plant for them to dry in the winter for dried floral décor!

  • Big Mophead Blue Blooms
  • Dense Deep Green Foliage
  • Great Hedges, Containers & Specimen
  • Heat & Humidity Resistant
  • Color-Changing: Blue in Alkaline Soil, Pink in Acid

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Hydrangea bushes do best in sun, but do appreciate afternoon sun, especially in the hottest summers. Plant in well-drained acidic soil that has plenty of peat moss and organic matter. Also, provide a thick layer of mulch to hold in moisture and insulate the roots.

  • Full Sun & Part Shade
  • Acidic, Moist Well-Drained Soil
  • Thick Layer of Mulch
  • Heat, Humidity & Disease Resistant
  • Prune Early Spring as You See New Growth

The big blue blooms of HI™ River Bigleaf Hydrangea will cheer up your landscape with their unique color all growing season! Get new and innovative plants delivered to your door from NatureHills.com!
