Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Delivery and Shipping

Shipping

To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Once your order is placed, you will also receive the specific shipment time-frame information as part of your order confirmation. Once an item ships, you will receive shipment notification and tracking numbers, so you can follow along while your plant travels to your doorstep. We use FedEx, UPS, or USPS at our discretion.

Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

*If you have found your zone already, it will be highlighted in the table below.

True dwarf shines in the sun and shade! OK plant lovers, we are here to answer a burning question for you. We know that you have seen this plant around, if not in your neighborhood then in the landscaping around a local business. You've probably heard it called Heavenly Bamboo because its leaves and stems are so very Bamboo-like. But the question is often "Is it really Bamboo?"

Nature Hills has the definitive answer for you!

And the answer is ...

NO! It's not. It is actually in the Barberry family! We hope that you can sleep better at night, now that you've got that answered!

The Harbour Dwarf Heavenly Bamboo (Nandina domestica 'Harbour Dwarf') is perfectly sized for modern gardens. It adds a shot of bright red to sunny borders or shady beds alike. It can even handle full shade, but won't color up as much as in the sun.

The lacy fine-textured foliage shines in lush green with red tinges and is highlighted by red stems. Even the pollinator-friendly white spring flowers have red stems and the red fall color is accented by red berries that birds love! That red fall color remains throughout the winter in frost-free growing zones where these plants act more as evergreen than deciduous (which Nandina will do in colder winters).

Sometimes spelled Harbor Nandina, these hardy shrubs grow throughout USDA planting zones 6 to 11, these can be broadleaf evergreens in the hotter climates, but deciduous to semi-evergreen in cooler growing zones. Easy to grow, low-maintenance, Nandina are water-wise and stand up to xeric conditions! They're also perfect for fire-wise defensive plans!

Planting and Application:

So, even though Harbour Dwarf isn't true Bamboo, it is still a beautiful and very useful landscape plant, especially in those areas that need some texture and color. The problem is a few Nandina's can get pretty large. Nandina thrives in Rock Gardens, as foundation hedges, and is low-maintenance enough to survive Commercial sites!

The current trend toward smaller plants for smaller gardens, urban lots, and postage-stamp backyards doesn't leave room for big plants. Luckily, Harbour is a true dwarf that barely reaches 18 inches in height and spreads nearly 3 feet wide. Lovely color and low-growing is a fantastic combo!

This semi-evergreen is a true 'plant it and forget it' shrub. It doesn't need pruning or coddling to keep it looking great. It fits into any garden style from modern to Cottage to rustic. It is great around architectural features, under windows, or around ponds as it accents but stays low enough not to cover or block views.

Fantastically vibrant edging and facer plants, you'll light up a weary foundation hedge or conifer privacy screen with a few well-placed Harbour Heavenly Bamboo! Ideal little specimens and groupings that light up an area you want to call attention to, Nandina not only shows off throughout the growing season but light up the dreary winter too!

Pot a few up as spillers and fillers in large planters and mixed container gardens, adding lush color and texture around your porches, barbecue pit, or back deck! Add a topiary evergreen or showy columnar tree for a unique formal effect!

Need an en masse groundcover or erosion control on a slope? How about a hard-to-mow hillside? Transform large areas with these low, spreading plants into visions of grandeur in a hurry!

  • Lacy Green Foliage With Red Tinges & Red Stems
  • Semi-Evergreen Mounded Shrubs
  • White Flower Panicles On Red Stems
  • Red Berries For Birds In Fall
  • Space-Saving Edging, Borders, Container Accents, Small Accents & Massing

#ProPlantTips for Care:

These rugged plants are easy to care for and grow in full sun in cooler climates, or shaded conditions in hotter growing zones, where they appreciate shade in the afternoon. Nandina must have well-drained soil and enough regular water to get established. But once settled, you will only need to provide supplemental water during long periods of drought from then on. Add 3-4 inches of arborist mulch over the root system to keep it cool and hold moisture in more consistently.

Urban pollution-tolerant, disease, and pest-resistant plants, Nandina has an upright, compact nature, far smaller than that of other varieties. Harbour won't require any special care from you, and it's even drought-tolerant once established!

All this adaptability and the fact birds eat the seeds and spread them far and wide, meaning in some locations, Nandina grows where it should not. Enter your Zip Code in the Plant Highlights section to find your Hardiness Zone on this page and you'll see if Nature Hills can ship Nandina safely into your area.

Nature Hills Nursery is at the forefront of environmental regulatory compliance with all agricultural laws. We use Plant Sentry™, an online tool that blocks shipments of plants that can behave invasively in your locale.

  • Full Sun & Partial Shade
  • Any Type Of Well-Drained Soil
  • Moderate to Low Moisture - Drought Tolerant Once Established
  • Prune After Flowering If Needed
  • Heat, Drought, Pest & Disease-Resistant
