Shipping
To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Once your order is placed, you will also receive the specific shipment time-frame information as part of your order confirmation. Once an item ships, you will receive shipment notification and tracking numbers, so you can follow along while your plant travels to your doorstep. We use FedEx, UPS, or USPS at our discretion.
Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

Growing Zones
Yee Haw! Get ready for the Gunsmoke Switch Grass PP#32373 (Panicum virgatum 'Gunsmoke') as it moseys into your landscape! This is no ten-gallon-hat-sized Panicum, instead, it's a new and improved compact Ornamental Grass with wide, steel-colored blades that are densely packed!
The robust growth habit features pronounced summer seed heads that float over the top of the vertically vase-shaped form. Blazing a yellow-orange color in the fall, Gunsmoke turns a lovely tan for the winter. This is no floppy Grass either, the sturdy form remains upright all winter in most areas, defying wind and storms, and stands tall unless your area is subjected to heavy wet snows.
This mid-sized Switch Grass variety keeps its native hardiness and grows throughout USDA planting zones 4 to 9. Disease and pest-resistant, adaptable, and versatile perennials, Ornamental Grass are fantastically low-maintenance landscape workhorses!
Landscape Application:
Gunsmoke Panicum is a smokey mist-like presence in the landscape, adding a wispy, fine texture and color as focal point plantings, and container specimens, and softening the corners of outbuildings without taking up much space. Growing about 4 feet tall and spreading around 3 feet wide, Gunsmoke won't overwhelm your landscape beds in any way!
Ideal for light, seasonal screening and privacy hedges, for use as an airy backdrop to your garden beds and borders, and as swishy accent rows along a path or driveway, Gunsmoke Panicum will bring a softness and lightness to evergreens and shrubs with coarser foliage. Create restful nooks by using this white noise generator and enjoy the gentle motion it brings to your garden!
It's not just a pretty face either! Gunsmoke Switch Grass stabilizes soil and slows erosion on hillsides, making it perfect for use alongside ponds or streams, or on hard-to-mow slopes that are dangerous to mow. Tough as nails, Switch Grass handles Xeric sites and works great in Fire-wise landscapes too!
Switch Grass is wildlife-friendly, providing shelter and cover for birds throughout winter chill and summer storms. This Ornamental Grass is a versatile workhorse for updated prairie installations and as eye-catching, low-maintenance mass plantings, allowing birds and wildlife to frolic.

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Switch Grass is a warm-season grass so it may take a bit to get going in the spring, but thrive through the heat and full sun of the summer months. Plant Panicum in about any kind of well-drained soil where it will thrive. Give new plants a regular schedule of moderate moisture access and a mulched bed for best results but Panicum are drought tolerant once established.
Wait until early spring (before new growth emerges) to bundle up the entire clump and cut back to a few inches above the ground. Rake out the interior and divide clumps every 3-5 years to maintain their vigor.
- Full Sun For Strongest Growth
- Any Well-Drained Soil
- Moderate Moisture - Drought Tolerant Once Established
- Prune Back Early Spring
