Ornamental seed pods and Gray's Sedge (Carex grayi) is a hardy native with very showy light green blades and large light green seed pods! The flowing foliage and tousled mounded foliage look fantastic all growing season, but by summer, the spiky seed balls appear and add further interest!

These are vital wetland and riparian area herbaceous perennials grasses that support wildlife. Gray's Sedge Ornamental Grass is a clump-forming perennial that reaches three feet in height and width. Snip the ornamental seed pods for floral arrangements, or keep them on the plant for interest throughout the summer and fall!

Gray's Sedge Grass is a hardy native grass throughout USDA growing zones 5 to 9, and tolerates wet to high moisture soils. The clumping glossy foliage holds up to the heat and sun without fading! Sedge is becoming quite popular in landscapes as a lawn replacement or groundcover option in areas where the ground can be soggy or shaded.

Planting and Application:

Plant around the 'splash zone' around a pool, or along a water features edge, handling moist to wet soil locations and pond environments! In average moisture soil, Gray's Sedge has fantastic color that boosts interest, coupled with graceful, arching blades sweeping the path, lining walkways, and as edging and facer plants!

Even in containers and planters, Sedges spillers and fillers add their fine texture to your porch and patio planting! Create a container water garden on a balcony or in your meditation garden where the trickling water helps soothe the mind.

When planted in mass, Sedges can be beneficial for erosion control and native wetland plants. Plant around ponds, streams or any moist area. Their love of moist conditions makes Sedge ideal in the Rain Garden and around water features! Plant near where the HVAC unit drains or by the gutters where other plants may struggle.

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Sedges prefer dappled partial shade but will grow well in full sun as long as it gets steady water, or afternoon shade. Plant grasses and Sedges in well-drained sites regardless if you are planting in a wet to moist site or average garden conditions. All plants prefer a 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch around their roots, especially in drier conditions. Prune back the plants or clean their mounds in the early spring if needed.

  • Full Sun & Tolerate Part Shade
  • Moderate to High Moisture Needs
  • Well-Drained Soil & Mulched Beds
  • Prune Late Fall/Winter
  • Not Favored By Deer
