Hold onto something sturdy or have a garden bench close by - because this plant will make you swoon! The Graceful Grasses® Vertigo® Fountain Grass (Pennisetum purpureum VERTIGO 'Tift 8') is an exotic and graceful hardy grass with saber-shaped leaves! Also known as Pearl Millet, the leaves that first appear are narrow and dappled green, but summer brings on the bold!
Transforming into broad and purple to burgundy foliage with their greenish undertones, the entire fountain of waving, arching foliage takes on a dramatic two-tone effect. As it matures, the blades gradually continue to turn more purple and grow wider! The gently drooping plumes are a gorgeous purple-burgundy as well and look great in both fresh and dried floral arrangements!
This heat-loving warm-season variety of Purple Fountain Grass by Proven Winners® performs amazingly all summer and fall! It then provides wonderful winter interest with its dried foliage and puffy bottlebrush seedheads that start out the same color as the foliage and dry to purplish tan in winter. Hardy perennials in USDA growing zones 8 to 11, other growing zones can use these as annual and seasonal accent plants.
Planting and Application:
Vertigo® develops into a spectacular deep burgundy-purple Ornamental Grass that adds an architectural feature to any landscape! You can plant Vertigo as an accent or container plant, which is its main use as an annual thriller in the northern states but in warmer climates with mild winters, this can be a perennial grass. The spiky foliage has presence and commands attention before dazzling you with its chameleon act.
It is dramatic in mass plantings or groupings too, so take advantage of its high-impact changing color to spice up a path or walkway, add pops of color winding throughout Perennial borders or Rock gardens, and let Vertigo® add its dizzying effect as backdrops and seasonal screening in the ground or in pots around seating areas, patios, and balconies.
- Dappled Green Leaves Turn Saturated Purple Through Summer
- Leaves Widen Through Growing Season
- Perennial In Warm Climates & Annual In Cooler Zones
- Fluffy Bottlebrush Plumes for Floral Décor & Winter Interest
- Container Thrillers, Groupings, Rows & Dramatic Architectural Color
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Fountain Grass is long-lived and easy to grow! Vertigo® Pennisetum does its very best coloration in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day). Plant this warm-season grass in a well-drained site and provide enough moisture to get it established, but after this is a low moisture needs plant. Any type of soil seems to suit this plant just fine so long as it has good drainage. Container plants need excellent drainage holes and appreciate a layer of mulch over the soil's surface. Prune in early spring unless you are in an area prone to fire, then prune down as soon as the foliage dies back for the year.
- Heat Loving Full Sun Grass
- Moderate Moisture to Low Once Established
- Any Well-Drained Soil
- Fantastically Easy to Grow!
- Prune Back Early Spring
Enjoy color-changing landscape accents with the Graceful Grasses® Vertigo® Pennisetum for dramatic color and graceful elegance that leaves you weak in the knees! Hurry and reserve yours today at NatureHills.com!
