Huron Sunrise Maiden Grass (Miscanthus sinensis 'Huron Sunrise') is an excellent new maiden grass with very full burgundy flowers that display their beauty in mid-August. This is its most outstanding feature! Because by autumn, the entire plant is a huge cloud of gilded foliage and creamy white plumes 5-6 feet tall!

Huron Sunrise blooms much more profusely than any other Miscanthus variety with a nice compact habit. Its wonderful golden fall foliage color is an added bonus! Forming fountains of foliage only 2-3 feet in width, the clumps are fluffy space-savers because of their columnar growth. Wildlife love Miscanthus, but deer seldom bother with it unless truly desperate.

Warm-season Miscanthus is unrivaled in the diversity and beauty of its flowers, foliage, autumn colors and winter presence. The plant maintains its graceful form throughout winter, providing tremendous winter interest. Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 4 through 9, there is little this selection of the rugged native, warm-season ornamental grass can’t handle!

Planting and Application:

Huron Sunrise is extraordinarily adaptable to many conditions and purposes in the garden! Use it alone as a specimen to add height and fluffy texture to the Cottage border or bulk up a mixed perennial or shrub borders the back of the row décor. You will certainly want to plant Huron Sunrise grass where it's wonderful winter interest can be enjoyed!

This Maiden Grass is also spectacular for mass plantings and as seasonal screening! Line pool seating, section off a prairie and wildflower garden, and create garden rooms for privacy that whisk you away with their motion, white noise, and dense growth! Try them in large containers and planters - add some casters and have a rolling shade or privacy screen you can enjoy anywhere you need it in the sun! Miscanthus is a natural for use in Rain Gardens or at the pond's edge as they are in xeric hell strips and Rock Gardens!

#ProPlantTips For Care

Doing very best in full sun, Huron Sunrise tolerates some shade but won't be as strong and upright, possibly even falling flat. It will grow in almost any soil, from loose sand to heavy clay. Miscanthus is easy to grow and is a good choice for beginners. Adaptable to salt, drought and it's impressively hardy, tolerant, and resistant! Deer and rabbits rarely bother it.

A warm-season grass, Huron Sunrise won't start growing until the soil temperature warms up so have a bit of patience. Prune before growth starts to appear in early spring and remove built-up leaves and debris from the center.

  • Full Sun & Partial Shade
  • Grows Anywhere, Even in Wet Soil
  • Plant in Well-Drained Soil
  • Adaptable To a Wide-Range of Conditions
  • Prune Early Spring

Hi John,

Thank you so much for your wonderful feedback! We’re delighted to hear that the Huron Sunrise Maiden Grass is thriving in your Zone 5 yard and that it’s adding a special touch to your landscaping. It’s a fantastic choice for colder climates, known for its hardiness and striking appearance even when temps dip low.

If you’re interested in helping it flourish through the seasons, we recommend cutting it back to a few inches above ground each spring before it starts new growth. This promotes fuller, healthier clumps year after year. Also, providing well-drained soil and a sunny spot will ensure it stays vibrant and resilient.
