Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Full sun is mandatory for those massive 14 inch flower spikes. Aim for at least 8 hours of direct light, as partial shade results in fewer flowers and floppy stems that cannot support the weight of the blooms.
  • Soil: This variety insists on excellent drainage and will fail in soggy ground. If you have heavy clay, plant it in a mound slightly above the soil line to keep the roots from sitting in water like they are in a bathtub.

Watering Requirements

Keep the soil consistently moist during the first year to help the root system expand into your native soil. Once established, these shrubs are quite drought tolerant and only need supplemental water during long dry spells. Inconsistent watering during the summer heat can lead to smaller flower panicles and general plant stress.

Pruning Tips

Because this shrub blooms on new wood produced in the current season, you should prune it back hard in early spring once you see green buds appearing. Think of it like a heavy haircut. Cutting the stems down to about 12 or 24 inches off the ground prevents the plant from becoming a leggy shrub where the flowers are too high to see.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced granular fertilizer or a dedicated rose food once in early spring as new growth begins. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer. This prevents the plant from producing tender new stems that will easily freeze and die when the first frost hits.

Add a sculptural focal point in your Butterfly Garden with a Butterfly Bush covered with absolutely enormous, lavender-purple flowering panicles! Put Grand Cascade Butterfly Bush (Buddleja x 'Grand Cascade') to work as a showy, nectar-rich resource for your precious local ecology and doesn't display seeding!

Enjoy watching jewel-toned Hummingbirds, Pollinators, and fuzzy native bees cavort and dip into the cascading display of drooping blooms! Each thick panicle measures a foot or more and grows out, down, and away from the shrub, heavy with their burden of nectar-rich florets!

You won't believe how much visual impact they have on your landscape! The beautiful shade of purple and soft silvery green foliage partners beautifully with many other flowers and shines in the sun landscape throughout USDA hardiness zones 5 through 10!

Planting and Application:

Grand Cascade Butterfly Bush is also well-suited for use as a specimen or grouping in a lawn planting bed. They'll add a charming look at the end of the season...when other flowering shrubs have bloomed and finished! Pumping out huge panicles until frost with some attentive deadheading on your part.

Snip a few of these extravagant and giant flowering spires to create an amazing cut flower arrangement! They'll stand up to the big bountiful blooms of Hydrangea, and even outshine Roses! Their honey-scented fragrance will win you over as well! Try them near a window or doorway, where you'll be able to smell their honey-scented blooms.

Despite being a larger Butterfly Bush, growing up to 5-6 feet in height when in bloom, Grand Cascade deserves to be front and center! Give it a prominent location on a front yard berm or as the crown jewel to your Cottage Garden, mixed shrub border, Rock Garden, or even planted on either side of your front steps! A Children's Garden becomes more magical with these huge blossoms and their entourage of flying visitors!

They are great for screening and prettily solve some privacy concerns you may have with a flowering hedge the neighbors can’t possibly be upset by. You'll hide unsightly views or delightfully block nosey neighbors. Butterfly Bushes grow quickly...so by the time summer is in full swing, you'll feel secure around seating areas and the pool deck without a heavy feeling of oppression.

Use multiples in a zigzagging planting pattern spaced four feet apart on center on a hard-to-mow slope, or on top of a retaining wall so they can droop over the edges!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Give Buddleia Bushes a spot in full sun with well-drained soil. Provide regular water for young plants just getting established in your garden, and plenty of supplemental moisture during drought and the summer months to keep the enormous flowers returning until frost. Plant with Nature Hills Root Booster, and a 3-4-inch layer of arborist mulch to support your shrub's root system further.

Deadheading keeps blooms returning until frost but wait until early spring to prune to ensure a dense, more floriferous shrub. In cold climates, you will want to cut these plants back to the ground before spring because this plant acts like an herbaceous perennial. However, when grown in warm growing zones, these woody shrubs only need an early spring trim will help ensure the best performance and best flowers.

  • Heat Tolerant & Full Sun
  • Moderate Moisture & Fertility
  • Blooms on New Wood - Prune Early Spring
  • Rarely Damaged By Deer
  • Drought Tolerant Once Established
  • Non-Invasive - Easy to Grow Without Self-Seeding
