Plant Sentry™
Plant Sentry™
Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.
This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

You've heard the old saying about carousels, haven't you? Lots of action but it gets you nowhere. Well, let us introduce you to a carousel that gets you somewhere! The Golden Carousel Barberry (Berberis thunbergii 'Bailsel'). This hardy shrub is a sport of both Japanese and Korean barberries and combines the best of both tough parents.
The leaves are the star of the show in spring as a gorgeous golden yellow. In summer, they take on a green hue, turning almost chartreuse. In the fall they get orange and red tones. Since Carousel is grown for its gorgeously colored foliage, make sure that you plant it somewhere where it will be seen and appreciated!
While it is true that while some Barberry cultivars are invasive in some areas, they may not be invasive in all areas. So Nature Hills has taken the initiative to develop our own compliance company called Plant Sentry™ so that you will not be able to even purchase a plant that your state has prohibited because of invasiveness, insects, or disease.
Plants may be available on our website, but if your state prohibits that plant from being shipped to you, the sale will not go through. We have a full-time compliance officer who keeps those restrictions for all states current and up to date at all times. We are the only nursery selling plants online that is fully compliant according to each state's rules.
Landscape Application:
This upright shrub lights up large containers by your front door or around the porch, perfect in urns or in the ground flanking the entrance to your front steps or on either side of a garden gate! Any porch, patio, or poolside deck gains color and screening when used strategically!
Carousel looks great with conifers and other evergreens with the small round leaves making a pretty textural foil to the needles of those plants! A brilliant hedge on its own, Carousel will shine while stopping unwanted trespassers. Plant beneath a first-story window to add a layer of security!
Speaking of needles, if you are looking for a protective hedge, barrier plant, or a deterrent planting under windows, Golden Carousel is perfect. This bright beauty hides some sharp thorns. Be careful when you plant it and wear heavy gloves!
Did we mention it's tough? It is tolerant of urban pollution and deer-resistant, so whether you live in the city or the country, Golden Carousel will thrive! Plant en masse for brilliant color, or along the sidewalk to add a good hedge to stop unwanted foot traffic without worrying about lots of care.

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Japanese Barberry does best in full sun and develops the best color. While they do like a little shade so that its leaves don't burn in hotter climates. Any well-drained soil that is slightly acidic and has regular water access works great for these durable plants. They're even waterwise once established.
Prune or shear after the flowers are done to shape and keep their size in check. Every 3-5 years, you can renewal prune by removing the oldest, fattest stems and allowing younger, more colorful stems to take over. Hardy throughout USDA planting zones 4 to 9, growing into an upright 3-4 feet tall shrub that only spreads 2-3 feet wide. These deciduous shrubs are easy to grow, low-maintenance, and seldom bothered by deer.
- Fast Growing In Full Sun
- Well-Drained Slightly Acidic Soil
- Moderate Moisture Needs - Drought Tolerant Once Established
- Prune After Flowering
- Deer, Pest, Pollution & Disease Resistant
