Gold and green hearts plus rosy buds, the Gilded Hearts Redbud Tree (Cercis canadensis 'Gilded Hearts') is just the jewelry your garden has been waiting for! After all the enjoyment it provides you, it's time to reward your landscape with some bling! Rosy red buds appear in the early spring, clustering along the very branches of your tree, exploding into fluorescent pink blooms before the foliage arrives!
After the flowers have had their show and the early emerging pollinators have had their fill, that's when Gilded Hearts really starts to shine! Lovely heart-shaped leaves emerge a brilliant gold and age green gradually, causing an ombre effect as new growth continues to remain gilded on the branch tips! The effect is utterly eye-catching!
They then revert back to their golden yellow in the fall for a fond farewell! But that's when the bird-friendly, flat seedpods arrive for fall and winter interest! These airy trees with their graceful, multi-stemmed branching can grow 15-20 feet in height with a 12-18 foot spread at a moderate rate. Hardy deciduous ornamental flowering trees throughout USDA growing zones 5 to 9, Gilded Hearts will delight you through both heat and chill!
Planting and Application:
Gilded Hearts is an interesting shrubby tree that can be grown as a shrub form with branching all the way to the ground, as a multiple-stem clump form, or as a single-stem tree! So you will have fun playing with the many options Gilded Hearts has in store for any landscape!
When used as shrubs, the ombre foliage and burst of juicy spring color are fantastic for light and airy screening and creating outdoor garden rooms that envelop you in color. The tree form creates a spectacular specimen or street tree! Line the driveway in eye-catching pink and gold, or create a front yard berm that will have the neighborhood green with envy!
Redbuds have the best flowering and foliage color in full sun, but because they are also understory trees in nature, Gilded Hearts is adept for use as wildlife-friendly groupings that cast light shade over seating areas, or in rows and odd-numbered clusters for naturalizing along the edge of a woods where they get some morning sun! Pollinator gardens and Cottage gardens both gain a picturesque anchor and focal point!

They have the most flowers and the best-colored leaves in full sun, but those plants are grown in the hottest of its favored growing zones do appreciate afternoon shade. Also great in part sun and dappled sun conditions, but with slightly less color and fewer flowers. Still a stunning display in any setting!
Prune after the spring bloom only or you'll miss out on next year's flowering display. Redbuds absolutely love a 3-4 inch thick layer of arborist mulch over the entire root zone to keep them cool, hold in moisture, and insulate the roots from heat and chill.
