Very Modern Shade Tree - Frontier Elm
Now even small yards can add a cutting-edge, disease-resistant Elm tree for shade, shape, and saturated fall foliage. We are thrilled to offer this disease and pest-resistant selection from the U.S. National Arboretum.
Right-sized Frontier Elm Tree (Ulmus x 'Frontier') represents the many years of hard work from dedicated plant scientists. Everyone loves the statuesque charm of Elm trees, and these hardy natural hybrids blaze the trail to reintroduce them back into urban settings.
With a compact pyramidal, upright form, Frontier Elm fits in tighter places than other varieties. We recommend that you give all Elms plenty of "elbow room", but this one can easily fit into a smaller lot.
Enjoy their beauty all year long, even in the long, cold days of winter. Smooth gray bark and a marvelous form create a "living sculpture" in your space.
This sculpture has a story to tell! Site it where you'll be able to see it from indoors to double your pleasure.
The glossy, small leaves provide generous shade all growing season. Once the nights start cooling off, the foliage deepens to an astonishingly bold display of burnished red with a purple overcast.
Frontier is the hybrid result of a selection from controlled pollination of Ulmus carpinifolia with Ulmus parvifolia by A. M. Townsend. It's been field-tested to resist Dutch Elm Disease, Elm Yellows, and Elm Beetle.
This tree looks refined, yet features a rugged nature that withstands tough urban conditions. Flowers are rarely seen and the tree does not produce seed. Grow it in sun, partial shade, acidic soil, alkaline soil, and diverse climates across the United States.
Plant these sinewy trees to add a healthy, athletic grace, along with welcome shade and fall color. Order your Frontier Elm from the tree experts at Nature Hills today.
How to Use The Frontier Elm Tree in the Landscape
Gain shade to cool your property with one or more on the south or southwestern aspect of your lawn. Please allow trees enough room for them to achieve their mature height and spread.
With their showy form, Frontier Elms look beautiful as single specimen trees. Use one to anchor an easy-care mulched planting bed with spring-flowering bulbs and groundcovers like Gro-Low Sumac or Rozanne Geranium.
Frontier Hybrid Elm can also mix well with other trees, shrubs, and perennials. Nature Hills encourages biodiverse plantings to create a healthy, interesting ecosystem.
Pair with other deciduous trees, or partner with evergreens. Place your Frontier Elm front and center against a curved backdrop of compact Baker's Blue Spruce for a spectacular focal point.

#ProPlantTips for Care
Frontier Elm is highly adaptable to soil types, as long as they drain well. Give it at least four hours of direct sunlight a day, preferring full sun for the best growth.
For the best results, plant Frontier in a location where it will have good air circulation and provide supplemental water during hot summers and prolonged drought. A stress-free tree is a happy, healthy tree!
Use Nature Hills Root Booster when planting to optimize growth over the life of your tree. This formula contains a valuable mycorrhizal fungus that supports your new trees' tiny feeder roots' ability to access nutrients and water.
Establish young trees with a medium amount of water during the first season. We encourage you to continue to apply supplemental water in times of drought to protect your investment.
Apply a three-inch layer of mulch over the root system. Pull the mulch away from the trunk at least six inches.
Do any corrective pruning in early spring. Balance the canopy as needed with strategic, preplanned pruning cuts.
- Grows in Full Sun or Partial Shade
- Well-Drained Soil
- Moderate Moisture Needs
- Superior Disease & Pest Resistance
- Tolerates Cold, Heat & Periodic Drought
- Widely Adaptable & Performs Well in Urban Conditions
