If your shady garden areas need a refreshing jolt of new life, try one of our favorites! The improved broadleaf evergreen Fragrant Mountain Sweet Box Bush (Sarcococca hookeriana var humilis 'Sarsid2') thrives in part shade and has the most amazing fragrance in spring.
You'll welcome spring every year when this pretty, well-behaved, useful shrub blooms. Don't be surprised when neighbors stop and ask, "Where is that incredible smell coming from?".
In late winter through early spring, tiny, white, fragrant flowers emerge. While they aren't showy, they will perfume your air with a fantastic, Hyacinth-like scent! Fragrant Mountain has a neat, clean look that shines in shady areas. It has rich evergreen leaves that fill out the shrub all year. This variety has larger and broader leaves than other selections!
In some areas, a very attractive, glossy black fruit will develop in late summer. Local songbirds love the little black berries that develop against the dark green foliage. Berries hang on plants for months before birds enjoy them in fall and winter.
Landscape Application:
The plant's upright, dwarf habit gives it a variety of possible landscape usages. Fragrant Mountain delivers big in form and fragrance in one of the most challenging conditions in modern landscapes. The dreaded 'dry shade' doesn't faze this shrub. It lives large in those hard-to-fill areas of your garden.
Fragrant Mountain Sweet Box also does well in those challenging north-facing spots. It handles urban conditions, such as compacted soils, road salt, and smog.
If you can plant it near a path, door or window, you should. The early spring scent alone is worth the price of the plant. Use this plant as an evergreen groundcover for a wonderful woodland garden!
Maintain it as a low hedge or as a shrub border in shady areas. Plant them 3 feet apart, measuring from the center of one plant to the center of the next. This assures a quicker fill when used as a groundcover, mass plantings, or for erosion control.
Or, grow it in a container for a shaded patio, where both the lush, green foliage and the wonderful fragrant flowers can both be appreciated!
But deer don't care for the taste. Feel good about your decision to use this selection in your yard, it's a wonderful choice!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Fragrant Mountain Sweet Box prefers full shade in hot climates and part shade/afternoon shade/dappled shade in cooler zones.
Plant in soils that are high in organic matter and are well drained. Plant it in well-drained soils. Please don't bury it too deep in its hole. Keep all visible branches well above ground. Water regularly to get the plant established. As the plant becomes established, you won't have to provide much supplemental water unless there is a prolonged drought.
Drought tolerant once it's established in your soil, Fragrant Mountain is an easy-to-grow, low-spreading shrub that amps up the appeal of your dull, shady spots. In the warm, dry climate of Zone 9, give it afternoon shade. Provide a 3-inch layer of mulch underneath the entire plant in locations where it is exposed to sun. Summer irrigation may be required during heat spikes.
Areas with humid summers should avoid over-mulching this beautiful shrub. Grow it on the dry side. If you want to plant in an area that stays soggy, add at least 18 inches of soil in a mound above your native soil line. Plant directly in that mound, and plant shallowly to improve drainage.
Prune in the spring after flowering to maintain the plant's shape of height, the Fragrant Mountain takes to being pruned and will fill in quite fast after hedging.
