Big bi-color blooms on a classic French Bigleaf, the Firefly Bigleaf Hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla 'HORCOS') is a unique, semi-double mophead! Reblooming rounded clusters of cream and red blossoms almost don’t look real! The vivid color of the blooms looks to have an artist's touch all summer until fall, when they become dried pompoms for indoor décor or winter interest.
Backed by a dense clump of very broad deep green leaves that have the classic Hydrangea quilting and toothy edges for an elegant, soft effect in the landscape. The big round clusters are tightly packed and look incredible in the garden, in a vase bouquet or as specimen plants in large planters! Plus, they return for a second flush of blooms later in the growing season.
Firefly is hardy in zones 6 and up, these are fairly heat-tolerant! Planting your Firefly in acidic soils will change the red/cream combination to more of a red/pink hue.
Planting and Application:
Mophead Hydrangeas are fantastic back of the border backdrops and accents. So use long rows of them for privacy and screening and elegant property division. Great facer shrubs for larger, leggier plants and trees to hide their bare stems, and these tough plants add a graceful element to your home’s foundation planting and friendly fences separating your front yard from the sidewalk.
Firefly Bigleaf Hydrangea looks amazing in Cottage and cutting borders, behind Perennial and cutting gardens, and are of course ideal in the pollinator garden! Indoors or out, let these vivid blooms create colorful hedges and focal points! You’ll love the bouquets and dried décor you will make!
- Bi-Color Red & Cream Semi-Double Flower Clusters
- Reblooming Mophead & Pollinator-Friendly
- Broad Rich Green Leaves
- Heat & Humidity Tolerant Mid-Sized Shrub
- Hedges, Privacy, Foundation & Specimen
#ProPlantTips for Care:
The best time to prune Bigleaf Hydrangea is as they break dormancy. Prefering full sun in the coolest climates, but do best with morning sun and afternoon shade in hot climates. Appreciating the morning sun to dry the leaves of dew. Plant in an enriched, well-drained and consistently moist soil environment. Prune after flowering if needed for size control and shaping. But you can trim back any stems that died back over the winter.
- Full Sun, Appreciates Afternoon Shade/Part Shade
- Prune in Winter or Early Spring
- Highly Organic, Enriched Well-Drained Soil
- Regular Moisture - Mulch Beds Very Well
- Slight Color Variation in Acidic pH
