Growing Zones 6-9
Kaleidoscope of color and traditional form, the Goshiki False Holly (Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Goshiki') is a fantastic little shrub with fine-textured foliage and lovely pointed, scalloped foliage! Called False Holly because of their resemblance to true Holly, it is truly a beautiful accent plant that is also extremely tough and durable with remarkable variegated foliage!
Goshiki means 'five colored' in Japanese and refers to the various colors that splash, speckle and stripe each leaf. The leaves can display five colors at once - cream, pink, orange, yellow, and white! All appear in attractive spots or swirls that combine together to create an eye-catching display and no two leaves are the same!
Clusters of tiny white flowers occur in late summer or early fall and are fragrant, and are often hidden by the foliage. This plant does not produce fruit. Goshiki makes an incredibly attractive broad-leaved evergreen with Holly-like leaves that exhibit amazing variegated colors year-round. Thriving throughout USDA hardiness zones 6 to 9, these False Hollies are easy to grow and love shrubs.
Planting and Application:
Growing into 6-8 feet tall, dense shrubs, Goshiki is made to be a colorful hedge for privacy and screening! A formidable barrier and property definition tool to create living walls and carve outdoor rooms that bring a sense of serenity to your landscape! Birds will love the dense hedgerows, groupings, and shelterbelts you can create with these as specimen plantings or combined as four-season interest accents in mixed-shrub borders.
Use Goshiki to brighten up a shady corner or for a colorful informal hedge. It can also be kept in a large container for many years. The foliage and beautiful form bring elegant formality, and the uniform overall shape creates a free-form sculpture. No wonder people love it as a specimen in Japanese Gardens! Limb up the lower branching to expose the multi-trunked stems and create tree-form specimens and accents that anchor foundation plantings and garden beds alike!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
This broadleaved evergreen is adaptable to full sun, as long as it has a bit of protection from winter winds is suggested in the colder zones. Part shade is best in the warmer zones. Not particular on soil type, so long as it is well-drained, Goshiki prefers moderate moisture throughout the growing season and a good drink before winter. Add a nice 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch is greatly appreciated to hold in moisture more consistently and to insulate the root system. Shear this plant annually to keep a neat appearance or to maintain desired shape or size. Pruning is best done in the spring for size control by carefully trimming the longest canes back to a leaflet pair growing below the surface of the canopy. For the best look, take your time while pruning. Layer staggered cuts evenly across the plant, hiding the cuts back into the canopy as you go.
- Partial Shade in Warm Climates or Full Sun in Cooler Zones
- Moderate Moisture Needs
- Any Acidic Well-Drained Soil
- Prune After Flowering
- Pest & Disease Free
- Deer Don't Prefer It
