Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Tasty fruit and superior style - Excel Fig Tree (Ficus carica 'Excel') is widely regarded as the best yellow Fig available! Don't settle for anything other than excellence when it comes to your Figs! This Fig variety produces large yellow fruit with high sugar levels late in the season. When ripe, they turn greenish-golden yellow and often feature freckles of sugar concentration.

It's undeniable that Excel Fig Tree produces amazing strawberry-hued succulent fruit, its form is also quite lovely. And with large vivid green leaves with three deep lobes and shiny gray bark, this tree makes an excellent container specimen.

With a medium closed eye, these are some of the sweetest figs you will find. When you cut into Excel Figs you are gifted with syrupy amber flesh that you won't be able to resist!

Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 8 to 11, Excel typically grows 15-20 feet in height and width, but can also be pruned easily to keep them at the right height for your landscape. Fig trees are partially self-pollinating, so you'll just need one for fruit. If you love figs, get yourself two or add another variety. Like most fruiting plants, a partner tree will really boost your productivity.

Planting and Application:

Figs belong in every ornamental landscape! The Excel Fig Tree is a wonderful edible landscaping tree adding a lush touch to your yard and attracting birds. If you don't want to share your harvest, plant yours in a fenced-in area and use netting.

The lush, large and lobed, tropical-looking foliage can screen out ugly views for you! Low branches provide wonderful screening to block unsightly views. It is also one of the best for containers grown as patio décor. Even pruned smaller and used as container-grown plants, Excel can be placed "strategically" to boost your privacy. Use them very successfully as a wonderfully useful hedge.

To create a solid, fruitful screen, plant them 5 feet apart on center. Measure from the center of one to the center of the next. Grow them informally, not sheared. Learn more about creating a dual-purpose Edible Landscape in our Garden Blog!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

To keep your Fig trees excelling, plant Excel where it can revel in the sunshine and produce some of the sweetest figs you'll ever try! Begins producing figs within two to three years after planting! They'll do best in very fertile, humusy, well-drained soil with a 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch over the soil surface. Provide moderate, yet consistent moisture access to prevent splitting. Use the Finger Test to determine when to water. Stick your finger into the soil near the plant up to the 2nd knuckle. Getting dry? Time to water. Still moist? Skip watering and check in a day or two. Prune when dormant to correct shape and control size.

  • Full Sun

Fig Tree FAQ

At what age do Excel Fig Trees bear fruit?

Nature Hills ships Fig trees with mature root systems that are already 2-3 years of age and the typical Fig tree will begin producing fruit at 3-5 years in optimal conditions.

Where is the best place to plant an Excel Fig tree?

Fig trees, like nearly all fruiting trees and shrubs, need enriched, well-drained soil in a full sun location to flower and fruit the best.

Are Fig Trees Self-Pollinating

Fig Trees are partially self-fruitful but do best with a pollination partner. Excel is a medium closed eyed-type of Fig and should have another similar Fig Tree planted nearby to maximize pollination chances.
