Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Shipping

To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Once your order is placed, you will also receive the specific shipment time-frame information as part of your order confirmation. Once an item ships, you will receive shipment notification and tracking numbers, so you can follow along while your plant travels to your doorstep. We use FedEx, UPS, or USPS at our discretion.

Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

Evergreen Currant (Ribes viburnifolium) is a remarkable plant that should be in every West Coast garden. Sometimes called Catalina Perfume, this evergreen plant releases a heavy, sweet scent of wine grapes after a good rain. Some people say that it smells like fine wine, but even better.

The deep green foliage not only smells good but is beautiful to boot with a lovely waxy sheen. The stems are red and play off of the green leaves nicely. In the spring it has small rose-colored trumpet-shaped flowers and if you live on the coast it will even set berries for you when the flowers fade. These red berries will attract birds by the droves.

Deer tend to avoid this tough little native shrub, unless it's the last item on the menu. Hardy in USDA growing zones 6 through 10, these can take the heat, but not the sun. Growing low and reaching a mature height of only 2-3 feet tall they spread to an amazing 6-8 feet in mature width!

Planting and Application:

Make sure that you plant it somewhere that it will be brushed against or is close enough for you and your garden guests to enjoy the great scent! And not just for you - create bird-friendly groupings or shelterbelts that serve up double duty as a bird sanctuary and privacy screening.

Handling low moisture environments, Rock Gardens and that tricky hell-strip along the road with ease. This is a great plant for Xeric and drought-resistant gardens, too! Plant atop steep slopes where they will hold back erosion and keep you from having to mow dangerous hillsides. You'll love the year-round interest the evergreen foliage provides your landscape!

  • Aromatic Broadleaf Evergreen
  • Rose-Colored Trumpet-Shaped Blooms In Spring
  • Red Berries In Summer Attract Birds
  • Low-Growing & Wide-Spreading
  • Tall Groundcover Or Medium Hedge

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Currant is a definite shade lover! Sun will burn it to the ground, as will any temperature under 10 degrees. (We've seen it burn in the sun just up to the shade line. That shows you how sensitive it is!) Wide spreading but short in height, it can easily be kept in check with pruning as it handles shearing like a champ. Fruit is produced on last year's wood and they should be pruned after harvest in late spring. Provide moderate moisture and it can handle low moisture environments once established.

  • Full Shade & Part Shade
  • Low Moisture Once Established
  • Prune After Fruiting
  • Deer Resistant
  • Drought Tolerant Broadleaf-Evergreen

If you live in a climate that fits it, you will for sure want to add the unusual beauty of the Evergreen Currant to your garden. The look, the performance and the scent make for one stand-out shrub! Order yours today at NatureHills.com!
