Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Delivery and Shipping

Shipping

To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Once your order is placed, you will also receive the specific shipment time-frame information as part of your order confirmation. Once an item ships, you will receive shipment notification and tracking numbers, so you can follow along while your plant travels to your doorstep. We use FedEx, UPS, or USPS at our discretion.

Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

*If you have found your zone already, it will be highlighted in the table below.

Do you love Hydrangeas, but not the old-fashioned, florist-type mopheads in pink or blue? The Ellen Huff Hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia 'Ellen Huff') is a cultivar of the American native Oakleaf Hydrangea. That means that it doesn't look like your grandmother's garden Hydrangea. The big white panicles are creamy and extend long from the shrub's dense form and uniquely shaped foliage.

Ellen Huff Oakleaf Hydrangea is a strong grower that will literally FILL your shady garden bed. This plant is beautiful in bloom, out of bloom and even out of season. In spring the big oak-like leaves emerge to signal winter is over. Then the flowers come in summer, covering the shrub in upright, semi-arching white blooms 6" to 12" long! You can keep cutting and cutting these to fill your vases.

But you might want to leave some on the bush because in fall the white flowers turn a soft pink and will stay there as the leaves turn a deep burgundy. Then when the leaves drop, the flowers will stay on, adding another texture to the already interesting exfoliating red bark! Hardy in USDA growing zone 5-9, these are wide-spreading shrubs! Reaching only 4-5 feet in mature height, but spreading to a whopping 7-10 feet wide! Need an area filled quickly with beauty? Choose Ellen Huff!

Planting and Application:

Some Master Gardeners claim that if they were only allowed one shrub in the shade, this would be it. This shrub adds a certain cultivated 'wildness' to your landscape. You won't be disappointed with Oakleaf Hydrangea in your shady garden bed. Plant en masse for wide coverage and erosion control in the shade, or along your home's property and foundation plantings to fill long swaths of ground in unique blooms! You’ll love the screening and privacy a hedge of these shrubs create!

These remarkable shrubs can tolerate a wide range of conditions and work great in any dappled shade location. A single specimen filling a corner of your yard becomes not just a prominent accent but also a bird-friendly shelterbelt and nesting location. Plant before your shelterbelts and windbreaks to soften hard lines and break up the monotony! Snip a few of the tall blossoms for your bouquets and dried décor!

  • Tall Panicle White Blossoms
  • Textured Colorful Oak-Leaf Shaped Foliage
  • Wide Spreading Native Selection
  • Hedges, Screening & Bird Friendly
  • Cultivated Wildness & En Masse

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Oakleaf Hydrangea handles most soil types, as long as they are well-drained. Gatsby Pink® does fine in partial sun or part shade. In the south, it appreciates afternoon shade and in the north, it prefers being protected from the coldest winds. Plant in soil that's well-drained and enriched. Mulch the root system well and maintain moderate yet consistent moisture all growing season. It blooms on old growth, so prune it after it finishes blooming in late summer.

  • Partial Shade to Dappled Shade
  • Moist Soil & Arborist Mulch
  • Prune Oakleaf Hydrangeas After Blooms Fade
  • Any Well-Drained Soil
  • Bloom Color Isn't pH-Sensitive

With big blooms and wide-reaching dense foliage, you'll love the tamed wilderness that Ellen Huff Oakleaf Hydrangea shrubs add to your landscape! Hurry and order yours from the Hydrangea experts at NatureHills.com today!
