A familiar sight across the northeast quarter of the U.S. in May is the Double Flowering Plum, a cold-hardy shrub form that puts on quite a show with its gorgeous double candy-pink flowers blanketing each branch with blooms. The Double Flowering Plum Shrub-Form (Prunus triloba) has the most incredible double, candy-pink flowers that seem to blanket each branch with fat pom-poms of color in early spring!

The amazing sight is even more welcome, as it's one of the first plants to bloom in spring. What a sight for sore eyes, long tired of the bland, boring, barren winter season! You'll adore the amazing blooms every year, and the local pollinators like bees and butterflies will adore these fluffy blooms too! The fragrance is something you'll look forward to as well!

The Double Flowering Plum shrub is robust, beautiful, and stately ornamental with a tidy round shape. The handsome spring and summer foliage is more of a light grass green and then the leaves transform to an attractive yellow-bronze-orange color in the fall! Also in the fall, the blooms are hermaphrodite and may be followed by 1/2-inch red fruit that birds and squirrels love!

The Double Flowering Plum is also known by a number of different names including the Rose Tree of China, the Dwarf Flowering Cherry, and most commonly the Flowering Almond. The plant is a native of China and is a great representation of the exquisite loveliness of many Oriental plants. Double Flowering Plum puts on quite a show for you each year. You can count on reliable performance throughout USDA growing zones 3 to 7.

Planting and Application:

Perk up your Spring Garden with one, or several in groupings to create a bird and wildlife-friendly grove. From a distance, a stand of these shrubs in your yard will look like a fluffy, pink cotton cloud! This is a fantastic specimen for your front yard where it can be enjoyed by your family and neighbors alike.

The smaller size makes this flowering ornamental perfect for high impact without sacrificing space! Try one However, the Double Flowering Plum is actually a very versatile plant that can be used in many landscape applications. The Flowering Plum has a multi-trunked form that can be limbed up to create a wonderful accent tree. Pair this shrub form with its single-trunked tree form for a layered effect in the landscape!

Or, you can keep the lowest branches on and use them as an ornamental large shrub. Plant it near patios in urban lots and courtyards as screening! A fast grower, the Double Flowering Plum makes a great screening plant. Plant a row of them 5 feet on center as a deciduous hedge or to identify borders and property lines. Measure from the center of one to the center of the next.

  • Gorgeous Double Pink Flowers in Early Spring
  • Grass Green Foliage Turns Orange/Yellow/Bronze in Fall

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Flowering ornamentals are very easy to grow! The Double Flowering Plum can take a lot of abuse in terms of soil condition, but it does need good drainage and ample room to perform at its best. Provide regular moisture throughout the growing season. Flowering Plums benefit from slightly acidic soil that is rich in organic matter. Add a top dressing of compost and apply soil Sulphur once a year to maintain a lower pH in higher-pH soils or in areas with high-pH water.

Choose a location with well-drained soil, and if poor drainage is suspected, you'll want to mound up by planting in a raised bed. Top-dress with a 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch over the top of the root system after planting. Be sure to pull the mulch away from the trunk by several inches.

Easily prune out any dead wood or crossing limbs in the spring after blooming when finished. Cut long, arching lateral branches back just above a leaf bud to keep it to the desired height. Air circulation is also important for Double Flowering Plums. Although hardy to a wide range of climates, if planted in poorly ventilated areas, the Prunus triloba can bloom early in colder climates resulting in blossom damage. Give it space to receive proper airflow.

  • Full Sun For The Most Blooms & Tolerates Partial Sun
  • Thrives in a Wide Range of Soils
  • Does Best in Well-Drained Enriched Slightly Acidic Soil
  • Moderate Regular Moisture & Mulched Beds
  • Prune After Flowering - Needs Good Air Circulation
  • Hardy, Thrives in Cold Climates & Easy to Grow!

Nature Hills sells out of this spring flowering ornamental almost as soon as the crop is ready for sale! Snap one or more up and treat yourself or someone special with this wonderful springtime eye candy. Order this lovely shrub-form for your landscape today!

Urban tree

Since I live in an inner city I needed a tree that did not take up much space -- and was not particular about the soil conditions. I did have full sun in my yard so I decided to plant this Double Flowering Plum. I have been pleasantly surprised so far, especially in the spring.

Hello Ted,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with the Double Flowering Plum Shrub! We're thrilled to hear that it’s thriving in your urban yard and that the springtime blooms have pleasantly surprised you. It sounds like such a perfect choice for an inner city space with full sun, and your considerations for soil tolerance show great care in picking the right plant.

If you ever want to enhance the shrub’s growth or ensure continued vigor, watering during dry spells and a light application of balanced fertilizer in early spring can do wonders. Also, since growing space is important for you, occasional light pruning can help maintain its size without sacrificing those lovely flowers.

Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have more questions or want tips for other compact, urban-friendly plant options.
