Low-growing groundcover, Kelsey's Dwarf Dogwood (Cornus sericea 'Kelseyi') isn't a tree. Instead, this great little Dogwood is a low-growing shrub that nicely fills in as a groundcover! Like its bigger cousins, Kelsey Dwarf blooms in the spring, but only small clusters of white flowers that butterflies adore. These quickly turn to small berries that the birds will happily pick clean for you.

The lush green leaves quickly cover the shrub making a nice 2 - 3 foot tall rounded plant. Grow several together and you'll have a low, thick mat of green all summer! Then the Kelsey Dwarf really shines in winter! Once the leave has turned yellow and fallen off the bush, you are left with dramatic red twigs that fire up your landscape. These are especially attractive when you have multiples planted side by side.

Highly adaptable and versatile deciduous shrubs, Kelsey Dwarf Dogwood thrives throughout 4-8 and only grows 2-3 feet in height and width. You'll enjoy the berries and colorful winter stems for winter interest and food for your songbirds!

Planting and Application:

Kelsey's Dwarf Dogwood is one of a handful of shrubs that actually prefers moist to wet soil, so use it in those challenging wet areas in your yard. Add a row as edging and facer plants in a Rain Garden or in a corner garden where the gutters drain. This showy Dogwood selection is an outstanding plant to use for naturalizing. Use an odd number in a loose grouping scattered along the edge of a prairie or throughout a woodland garden, or as erosion control on a hillside or hard-to-mow slope.

You can use Kelsey's in small-space gardens as an accent plant, as a low-growing hedge, or as a container plant, too! The lovely foliage, flowers, and berries stand out in the sun all season long!

Repeat along the length of a perennial border for an excellent edging, or wind throughout a garden as an effective living groundcover. You'll gain wonderful winter interest and structure through the dormant season. The bright red stems look incredible with small evergreen shrubs to hold up your design through the winter.

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Dogwood shrubs are super hardy, and these cultivars are very versatile. They can be planted in full sun or part shade, but you'll get the best color in full sun. They tolerate just about any soil, including areas that stay damp. Try them in those challenging wet areas and watch them thrive. Apply a three-inch layer of mulch over the root system to keep it nice and cool, and keep the foliage clean from mud splashing during rain.

Pruning can be done in the fall as your source for cut material. Use the cut stems for your containers and urns for winter decoration. You can also prune anytime during the winter or early spring before the new growth starts. The best way to keep Dogwood colorful is to renewal prune them. In fall, cut the oldest thickest stems right out at the ground level. You'll leave the thinner, younger stems in place. These are the stems that exhibit the best winter display.

Great Dwarf!

We received our Kelsey Dwarf Dogwood bare root plants in mid-April. They survived the shipping well and we actually couldn't plant right away, so soaked in water and they were ready to go. Leaves are starting to fill in. They are not as bright red as we hoped, but we are thinking that new growth in future years will possibly be brighter. They are very compact and will work well for the spot we planted them in.

Hello DebG,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with your Kelsey's Dwarf Dogwood! We're delighted to hear the bare root plants survived shipping smoothly and that careful soaking helped them adjust until you were ready to plant. It’s wonderful that the leaves are filling in nicely and that the compact growth is fitting well in your chosen spot.

Regarding the red coloration, you’re right—young dogwoods often develop their brightest red foliage as they mature, especially over the next few growing seasons. To support vibrant leaf color, ensuring your dogwood gets some partial sunlight and proper watering helps tremendously. Also, autumn color can be more vivid if the trees don’t experience drought stress during the summer months. If you have any more questions along the way or want to share how your dogwood is growing as the seasons go by, we’d love to hear from you!

Hi Deb,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with the Kelsey Dwarf Dogwood! We’re delighted to hear that the plants withstood shipping well and that you found soaking them helped keep them ready for planting—that's great plant care on your part. It’s perfectly normal for young dogwood leaves to deepen in color as they mature, so you may very well see that bright red vibrancy pop in the coming seasons. The compact growth habit makes them wonderfully versatile for your garden space, and it sounds like they’re off to a fantastic start.

If you want to encourage stronger leaf color, be sure to plant them in a spot with the right balance of sunlight and well-drained soil, and consider mulching to help retain moisture. We’re always here if you need planting tips or advice as your dogwoods grow!
