Alleman's Compact Dogwood (Cornus sericea 'Alleman's Compact') is a four-season beauty with white blossoms in May, pleasant green foliage in summer, giving way to bright red berries in fall, and finally an outstanding red twig color for winter! The flat white flowers are lovely landing pads for pollinators and bees and put on a grand display!

This Dogwood is a suckering, colonizing deciduous shrub that grows to 5 feet tall and wide. The branching is upright and spreading with most stems branching a little, except near the tip where the shape is rounded. Alleman's Compact Dogwood's leaves emerge yellow-green and mature to medium or dark green. The fall brings red-purple in the fall along with white berries for the local songbirds.

Winter brings bright red stems for a shock of color through the snows of winter! The bright color in spring, summer, and fall, plus colorful stems in winter makes Alleman's a year-round ornamental gem! Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 3 to 8, these cold-hardy shrubs grow into a dense rounded ball 4-5 feet tall and wide!

Planting and Application:

Alleman's is best for borders, mass plantings, wet soil sites, naturalized areas, woodland settings, and winter ornamental appeal! Faced with a steep slope or embankment down to a creek or stream? Line the sides with a mass planting of Alleman's Dogwood. Allow them to colonize freely and slowly naturalize into a wonderful garden feature.

People absolutely crave these colorful plants and no wonder! There is nothing as bracing as the sight of bright-red stems contrasting against a fresh layer of powder. Snip a few for your own bright to have plenty of cut material for gorgeous seasonal outdoor containers and winter décor. Try growing it out naturally as an untrimmed hedge - the pretty spring blooms and ornamental fall berries are well worth it!

Grow a hedge along the back of your cutting garden or along the length of your driveway to catch blowing snow. Use these to create "right-sized" privacy screens. Add a curved row of five behind your patio furniture or hide your neighbor's garbage cans. Create a solid screen by planting four feet apart on center. You'll measure from the center of one to the center of the next. Place these shrubs in a high-profile area. You'll want to showcase them during the long months of wintertime.

  • Creamy White Fragrant Flower Clusters
  • Gorgeous Green Foliage & Rounded Form
  • White Bird-Friendly Berries in Fall
  • Pollinator Friendly & Wildlife Thickets
  • Great Hedge, Screening & Privacy, Specimes & Winter Interest

#ProPlantTips for Care:

This compact Dogwood is best grown in organically rich, medium to wet, well-drained soils in full sun. This shrub prefers consistently moist, well-drained soils. Once they are established in your yard, they will be very adaptable to varying soil conditions. This includes soils that periodically stay wet and then dry out during summer. Give regular water for best results, especially for young plants and during extended droughts. Apply a three-inch layer of mulch over the root system to further cut down on surface evaporation, and keep the foliage clean from mud splashing during rain.

Prune Dogwood hard in late winter to early spring to keep your plants healthy, vigorous, and the most colorful. Please note that the new growth is the most brilliantly colored. This simple yearly pruning to thin out some branches are perfect for winter décor. Each fall, perform a renewal pruning, by cutting out a few of the oldest, thickest stems to the ground. Your plant should look healthy and last for decades in your landscape. Trim the roots and promptly remove root suckers if the colonial spread is not wanted. It is a rapid-growing, multi-stemmed, suckering, deciduous shrub that grows to a maximum size of 8 feet tall on erect, usually unbranched stems.

  • Fast Growing In Full Sun
  • Best in Well-Drained Soil
  • Thrives in Average to Moist Soil
  • Prune Late Winter/Eary Spring
  • Easy to Grow and Maintain
  • Deer Don't Prefer the Taste
