The Consort Black Currant is a deciduous shrub bearing edible fruit. Your Consort Black Current (Ribes nigrum 'Consort') will certainly provide succulent fruit, but it's also a lovely ornamental bush. As the blooms of your Black Currant fade, clusters of ¼-inch berries ripen into a glossy ebony. Just imagine popping one into your mouth for that explosion of tart-sweet flavor that only the Black Currant is prized for!

White, bell-shaped flowers hang from the plant in 1-2 inch clusters in the spring. These floral beauties also emit a pleasing, sweet fragrance that will attract bees and butterflies to your yard! Even without your Currant's floral artistry, its light green foliage gives your shrub a lively, vital appearance.

Before the leaves of your Currant drop for winter, it will gift you with one more treat in the form of a blazing display of reds and yellows as it casts off its summer plumage. It's self-fertile, so you can just have one of these great shrubs if you like and still get a great harvest.

Planting and Application:

Consort Black would look lovely in a naturalized area, as a group planting, or as a single specimen plant in your yard! Mix and match with other Ribes like Red Lake, or Gooseberry! The Currant's black berries look great paired with Aronia and Blueberries and boost your superfruit availability in your backyard

Make these black fruits into preserves, pies, or wine, and still have lots left over to share with friends and family because your Black Currant will be a high producer every year! Plant multiples for increased pollination and to let the birds still have their fair share of summer fruit.

The leafy foliage looks incredible as backdrops to your garden beds, as flowering and fruiting hedgerows the birds adore sheltering in and nesting in, while boosting food sustainability and wildlife in your landscape. For pretty property division, plant your Consort Black 2-4 feet apart for a solid fill. As a vigorous grower, you can create an energetic and interesting informal hedge!

Great in Rock Gardens and adding shade to your Vegetable and Kitchen Gardens! But these are more than a pretty face and can handle harsher conditions while pulling their weight in your landscape! Try these edible landscaping workhorses as erosion control, or to fill out a windbreak, snow drift barrier, or bulking up a privacy hedge.

  • Lightly Fragrant White Bell-Shaped Blossoms
  • Ornate Green Leaves
  • Dark Black Tart Edible Fruit

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Deciduous Currant Bushes do best in full sun in cooler zones, and appreciate either partial shade or afternoon shade in warmer USDA hardiness zones 3 to 7. Currants withstand some of the most intolerable conditions. It doesn't mind a city setting or clay soils! Provide regular water for new shrubs, but once established they can handle some drought. But for the best harvest of showy edible fruit, provide supplemental moisture and 3-4 inches of arborist bark chips.

Be cautious when trimming, fruit grows on wood that is 2-to-3 years old, so try to snip unhealthy or old-growth while leaving younger branches in a pruning process known as renewal pruning.

  • Full Sun & Partial Shade
  • Any Well-Drained Soil
  • Moderate to Low Moisture Needs
  • Easy to Grow & Low Browse For Deer
  • Blooms on Old Wood - Renewal Pruning Best

The Consort Black Currant is a beautiful deciduous shrub that requires little care and yet provides a bountiful harvest. What more could you ask for in a garden shrub? Order yours today at Nature Hills Nursery!
