Red Jewel™ Crabapple (Malus 'Jewelcole') is a small, deciduous tree with wonderful ornamental features. An outstanding ornamental Crabapple, the well-known Red Jewel™ variety has become one of the most popular white-flowering Crabapples in the country.
If you were to have only one Crabapple in your yard, Red Jewel™ would be that one! It has an upright growing habit and stays petite. This pleasing Crabapple offers clean foliage with improved disease resistance.
This is a wonderfully refined, disease-free selection shipped directly to your door by expert Nature Hills growers. We are expert shippers of healthy plant materials.
Red Jewel™ develops attractive buds that open to perfect, snow-white, delightfully fragrant flowers. The blooms cover the branches all the way down to the tips. Pollinators adore these blossoms and show up to pollinate and sip nectar!
Many homeowners choose modern Crabapple varieties simply for the flowers. But Red Jewel™ Crabapple also features showy fruits for seven months through fall and winter.
But on this variety, the fruit display is as colorful as the blooms! This is a terrific plant to give your landscape much-needed winter interest for most of the coldest season.
Watch in late summer as the tiny, bright red fruits bedeck the branches like tiny, brilliant red jewels. It's a wonderful contrast to other fall color plants nearby.
People notice this little tree with its spectacular fall fruit display! Place it front and center in your landscape design.
As the colder weather comes in, those cute, persistent red fruits start to deepen and darken into a sophisticated crimson color. Red Jewel™ looks really good with Holly, Yew, and other evergreens once autumn arrives - with the fruit hanging on your tree all winter long!
It's always so nice to have something interesting to look at in winter, and Red Jewel™ Flowering Crabapple adds a great touch. The lovely fruit display is nothing short of spectacular.
Migrating birds like Cedar Waxwings traveling through the following spring will also appreciate the fruit. This is a thoughtful snack to give the birds nourishment on their long flights.

How to Use Red Jewel™ Crabapple in the Landscape
Crabapples are renowned for their showy appearance, and Red Jewel™ is no exception. With a Red Jewel™ in your yard, you'll have exceptional natural beauty every year, and a welcomed treat for your wildlife as well.
This smaller Crabapple fits beautifully into small landscapes without taking up the whole yard. It's so showy, that it can be placed as a focal point in your yard.
Try one in your courtyard. Red Jewel™ is truly an impeccable choice as an anchor plant for the corner of your home. Or, use two to flank your entrance. You and your guests will enjoy months and months of showy fruit all winter long.
The upright branches bring an energy all of their own. Covered with breathtaking flowers or the most amazing display of bright red crabapples? This is a show-stopper!
Red Jewel™ is also quite often grown with a low canopy as a perfect screen to block out unwanted views. Simply keep the lower limbs on your tree as it grows.
To create a showy privacy hedge where the rounded canopies grow together, plant Red Jewel™ 6 to 8 feet apart. You'll measure from the trunk of one tree to the trunk of the next.
Use this technique to create flowering walls for your "garden room", a wonderful place to relax in luxurious privacy. A uniform formal planting of Red Jewel™ will make a fantastic wall of white in spring, green in summer, and don't forget red all winter long.
This tree is ideal for planting as a backyard accent tree or in lawn plantings. Use an informal grouping of 3, 5, 7, or 9 for a really natural look that draws the eye.
This is a terrific choice to use along your driveway or on the inside of your front walk. Crabapples with persistent fruit work beautifully along a drive or sidewalk without worrying about the apples dropping. Birds eat them, so there is no mess.
In tiny yards, try this as a featured specimen tree. The rich green foliage and the upright pyramidal character make it the perfect tree for the typically smaller yards of today's landscapes.
How about a backdrop for your perennial garden or mixed shrub border? Don’t forget to add some landscape up-lighting at the base of the trunk illuminating the attributes that change with the seasons. Be sure to add Holiday lights to accent that massive fruit display!
#ProPlantTips for Care
Red Jewel™ is quite hardy and will be a low-maintenance ornamental tree for your yard!
Red Jewel™ can handle a wide range of soil types from clay to sandy loam - as long as the site drains well. Choose a location with well-drained soil. If you need to improve drainage, add additional native soil in a mound 18 to 24 inches high. You'll plant directly in that mound.
The tree prefers a full-sun location but will tolerate a partial-sun location. Always favor the locations with the earliest and most morning sun as this is the drying sun.
Give your tree a moderate amount of regular water. This way, your tree stays healthy and stress-free. Remember, it's usually stressed plants that have issues in the landscape.
Happy, healthy trees - just like people - can generally shrug off any concern. Our Red Jewels™ show disease resistance to fire blight, rust, and apple scab.
Although this variety stays small and narrow if you need to prune to correct any branching, get out there early in the year. It's best to prune dormant Red Jewel™ Flowering Crabapples in late winter or early spring before they start to put forth their new spring growth.
Enjoy this exceptionally pretty tree in your yard. Order today at NatureHills.com!
