Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment

Growing Zones 2 - 7
Pretty fall interest, the native Coralberry Bush (Symphoricarpos orbiculatus) gets its name from the clusters of small showy fruits that hang on well into winter. They catch the eye of songbirds looking for a meal and look fantastic in the fall landscape or indoor floral bouquets.
The small white mid-summer flowers attract a host of butterflies, native bees, and other beneficial insects before the fruit arrives in late summer. These ornamental deciduous shrubs are very easy to grow and love the shaded and partly shaded areas of your landscape! They form a mounded, informal, arching shrub that generally stays low to the ground in the landscape with pretty, slender, finely-textured branching.
This low-growing ornamental produces attractive clusters of coral-pink to purple berries. Remaining on the plant through the winter, giving rise to other common names such as Buckberry, Snowberry, Snapberry, and Waxberry!
For a neat winter décor, the berry-laden stems look great in floral arrangements. Besides having significant winter interest, Coralberries are important Wildlife Shrubs!
Planting and Application:
Coralberry strub are an excellent deciduous shrub for shady areas! Their natural look works well in informal gardens and wide-spreading groundcover or garden filler! Mound-shaped, they add interest to woodland gardens and naturalized areas. Because they sucker freely and form a fibrous network of roots that binds the soil, Coralberry prevents erosion on slopes or streambanks.
Add to cutting gardens, Pollinator Gardens, cottage borders, as hedges and groupings! Its adaptability to moist soil makes them great Rain Garden specimens - especially once autumn rolls around and the plump berries show off their stuff! Create mass drifts or large groupings or low-growing colonies over time.

- Pearly Pink Plump Berries In Fall
- Versatile Ornamental & Floral Design
- Four-Season Interest

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Coralberry Shrubs are very tolerant of any soil and handle more shade in warmer climates or partial shade in cooler growing zones throughout USDA planting zones 3 to 7, and full sun in cooler growing zones. Plant new trees with the life-long symbiotic relationship of Nature Hills Root Booster and regular fertilizer. Top the soil around the drip line beneath the canopy with a 3-4 inch deep layer of arborist mulch.
These natives handle poor soil and alkaline sites, and grow naturally in limestone and clay environments, but they need to be well-drained. Deer-resistant, you will have little to worry about these shrubs!
These deciduous shrubs bloom on new growth, so prune only during the early spring before they start to grow. Otherwise, you risk cutting off those berry-laden branches before they can even form! You can perform renewal pruning every 3-5 years and keep your shrub's berry production top-notch. Simply cut out the oldest, least productive branches at the ground.
