Small, but mighty! The Compact European Cranberrybush (Viburnum opulus 'Compactum') is a small, mounded, dense shrub with a robust, full look, and stays quite a bit smaller than other Viburnums. You'll love the lush look of the densely branched shrub. Light and airy lacecap blooms are the ideal landing pad for pollinators and when combined with the tri-lobed foliage, it's a sight to behold!
In spring, the butterflies will come to visit the large, white lacecap flowers and once they fade you will be left to enjoy the red-tinged, lobed foliage that resembles maple leaves! Then, in the fall, your local songbirds will enjoy eating the bright red, showy fruits in winter. Keep your eyes open, as some of the berries ferment - It's not uncommon to see Robins or returning migratory birds get a little tipsy from eating the fruit after it has gone through freeze/thaw cycles.
New tri-lobed leaves have a reddish tinge, which is quite attractive. In autumn, the leaves develop a beautiful mix of burgundy, purple or red fall color. Very cold-hardy throughout the USDA growing zones 3 to 8, this Cranberrybush is a bit more heat tolerant compared to others in the family! Only growing 4-5 feet in mature height, this variety can reach a mature width of 5-6 feet wide. For maximum berry production, plant other Compact European Cranberrybushes or other Cranberrybush Viburnums!
Planting and Application:
This Viburnum variety is a low-maintenance deciduous shrub, and is excellent as a foundation plant or low hedge! This beautiful ornamental shrub will even work under windows and not obstruct your view. Spruce up a fenceline or rock wall by creating winding or straight rows, or groupings of 3 or 5 shrubs along the edge of your property!
Because of its small, mounded habit - and the fact that it is much more densely leafed than the majority of Viburnum, you'll be able to use this as a screening plant in small yards. Once the snows fall, you'll appreciate the winter interest and color that the shiny red berries show, sometimes persisting until spring - if the birds haven't carried them all away first! Dense habitat and shelter for songbirds and wildlife, you'll be hard-pressed to find a better all-round shrub for your garden!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Easy-care Compact European Cranberrybush Viburnum is adaptable to permanently moist to wet soils, poor soils, soils of various pH and even tolerant of urban pollution. Simply ensure it has adequate water for it to truly thrive. With regular moisture, it will perform beautifully for you in the landscape.
Wait to prune until after those amazing flowers are finished in spring. It's rare to need to tip prune, but you can shorten up the ends of branches right after flowering if you'd like. You can also skip tip pruning and renewal prune only if you wish to have fruit for birds. Renewal pruning removes the largest, thickest stems from the ground every 3-5 years to gradually rejuvenate the shrub. Leave the young stems in place, which will flower nicely for you next spring.
