Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

---|---|---|
2" x 2" x 3" | 0.18 - 0.21 dry quarts | 0.20 - 0.23 dry liters |

Cherry Laurels are go-to shrubs for hedges and landscape designers all across the country are clamoring to find modern-lot-sized shrubs and much-needed privacy! The problem, though, is that Laurels can get huge and don't fit into many smaller modern gardens.
The Compact Carolina Cherry Laurel Bush (Prunus caroliniana 'Compacta') takes care of all that! It matures at half of the size of a regular Cherry Laurel so it easily fits in any space but still has all of the attributes that have made it so reliable.
A faster-growing broadleaf evergreen with thick leaves, Cherry Laurel grows 8 - 10 feet tall and 6 - 8 feet wide but is completely amenable to pruning and shearing! The thick green leaves block sound and wind and provide plenty of shelter for birds!
In addition to the great foliage, Cherry Laurel are also lovely flowering shrubs that bloom with tons of fragrant, creamy-white candelabra-like flowers. that become Prunus family small black decorative berries the birds adore! While related to Peaches and Apricots, these fruits are not tasty for human consumption.
Want to know where the shrub gets its name? Crush a leaf in your hand and give it a whiff … The smell is like maraschino cherries!
Landscape Application:
Use this shrub liberally for a compact, versatile background plant in big beds or borders. They create a nice backdrop for interesting flowering shrubs or big bold perennials. They make a great privacy hedge and are thick enough for a solid privacy barrier, noise-barrier, or windbreak.
Maximize your outdoor living space with a thoughtful series of Garden Rooms. Plant a three-sided square and add a long outdoor table for dinner under the stars. If you can, why not give yourself a personal getaway destination at the same time? Extend a portion of the hedge into a private nook for reading, sun-tanning, or meditation.
For a solid hedge in the shortest amount of time, plant them four feet apart on center. Measure from the center of one to the center of the next. You can also stagger a double row if you want to establish a living fence...yesterday! Line the fence outside your pool deck and splish-splash without a care in the world.

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Plant Laurel in either full sun or partial shade, where they require at least four hours of direct sunlight a day to flower. Well-drained soils keep Cherry Laurel happy and healthy. Elevate your shrubs if you have heavy, clay soils that stay sopping wet for a long time after it rains. Needing regular moisture at first, established shrubs are low moisture needs and adaptable!
Your Cherry Laurels can tolerate heat, drought, and wind with ease. You can let them grow naturally or shear them into cones or columns or rectangles - they won't flinch! Simply prune after the flowers are spent.
- Full Sun & Tolerates Partial Shade
- Slightly Acidic Well-Drained Soil
- Moderate Moisture Needs
- Prune After Flowering
