Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Plant this shrub in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct light) to ensure the heaviest fruit production and the most brilliant red autumn color. It can tolerate partial shade, but the bloom count will decrease and the growth habit may become leggy rather than dense.
  • Soil: This plant is incredibly adaptable and performs well in a wide range of soil textures, from boggy, wet clays to dry, sandy locations. For the best health, ensure the soil is slightly acidic and enrich the planting site with organic compost to improve drainage and nutrient retention.

Watering Requirements

Maintain consistent soil moisture for the first growing season to help the extensive root system establish. Once established, Black Chokeberry is quite drought-tolerant, though consistent watering during the summer ensures plumper, higher-quality berries. Inconsistent watering during fruit set can cause berries to shrivel or drop prematurely.

Pruning Tips

This shrub blooms on old wood, so the best approach is renewal pruning in early spring while the plant is still dormant. Remove the oldest, thickest stems all the way to the ground to encourage fresh, vigorous shoots from the base. This technique keeps the plant productive and maintains a manageable size without sacrificing all of the season's flowers.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release granular fertilizer in early spring just as new growth begins to emerge. Avoid heavy nitrogen applications late in the summer, as this encourages tender green growth that will not harden off in time for winter freezes.

Savvy gardeners are using native shrubs like Black Chokeberry Bush (Aronia melanocarpa var. elata) as part of a big design trend in gardening! And it is no hardship to include a compact variety that looks great all growing season!

Black Chokeberry delivers a lot of ornamental charm. In spring, you'll enjoy the beautiful, white 5-petaled flowers with a subtle pink highlight. Watch as they transform into green berries, to red, to purple and finish black! Each healthy berry is similar to a small blueberry and can be added to smoothies, jams, jellies and sauces. Just add honey or sweetener to your recipes. It's not nicknamed Chokeberry for nothing!

Aronia berries are well on their way to becoming the new must-have superfood. The fruit production from each plant can be up as much as 30 or 40 pounds on each plant, packed with powerful antioxidants over 400% higher than blueberries!

Planting and Application:

Brighten up the shady areas of your landscape with this dainty, easy-care shrub. The summer leaves are lustrous and catch the light. In fall, enjoy the deep, rich color of the foliage; alight with red, orange and purple tones for a brilliant display. Hedges can also be used as snow fencing, privacy and shelterbelts. Just give about 4 feet from the concrete to reach their full, natural spread.

Add them to the edge of woodlands, or place them in back of Butterfly Gardens. Repeat along the length of your mixed borders. This is a wonderful native plant that provides shelter and food for many bird species, especially when food is scarce.

  • Darling Flowers in Spring
  • Lustrous Green Summer Foliage
  • Gorgeous Red, Purple & Orange Foliage in Fall
  • Very Healthy, Edible Fruit in Fall - 30 - 40lbs Per Shrub!
  • Attracts Pollinators & Supports Song & Game Birds

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Black Chokeberry is found in low-lying wooded areas and has a very adaptable nature. Grow it in wet or acidic soils, in full sun, partial sun or shade. It even tolerates road salt, so can be incorporated into street plantings. You'll see fewer berries in shade.

  • Full Sun, Partial Shade or Shade!
  • Moist to Damp Well-Drained Soil - Tolerates Road Salt
  • Low Maintenance, Deer & Drought Tolerant
  • Prune Late Winter/Early Spring
  • Mulch Root System Well

We are big fans of Chokeberry shrubs here at Nature Hills. They are wonderful accent shrubs that can be used in almost any yard. Order today!
