Great Native Plant with Unique Features!

The Eupatorium 'Chocolate Mist Flower', Eupatorium rugosum, also known as White Snakeroot, has a shiny, deep purple stem with chocolate leaves.

'Chocolate Mist' is a wonderful white bloomer that stands tall! It is a definite attraction for butterflies and bees and is deer resistant.

Eupatorium 'Chocolate Mist' should be planted in full sun, but can tolerate some afternoon shade. Make sure it has a moist, well-drained area for optimal success; adequate moisture and a thick blanket of mulch are effective.

For a rich colorful display, combine this flower with Rudbeckia 'Black Eyed Susan', Aster 'Woods Purple', ornamental grasses or in a perennial border.

It is a great background plant and perfect for a butterfly garden, but does need a lot of room to grow.

Recent interest in native plants has encouraged the selection of more garden-worthy specimens such as 'Chocolate Mist'!

Big plant

I bought a Chocolate Mist plant because of the name. Really like the plant but I had to move it because it grew to tall and blocked out some of my smaller plants.

Dear DM,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with the Chocolate Mist plant! We're delighted to hear that you’re enjoying its unique charm. It sounds like your plant is thriving and growing vigorously, which is fantastic – though we understand how a tall, spreading plant can overshadow your smaller companions.

If space is becoming tight, consider occasional pruning to maintain a balanced size and keep all your plants happy. Also, planting Chocolate Mist where it can have ample space to stretch out or placing it less centrally among smaller neighbors can help prevent any crowding.

If you're interested, we have care guides and pruning tips available on our website that might offer some handy insights. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you want personalized advice on managing the growth or have any future planting questions!

Rooting for your garden’s success,

Hi Dm,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with your Chocolate Mist plant! We’re delighted to hear you’re enjoying it, and your story about moving it due to its height growing tall enough to overshadow smaller neighbors is a wonderful reminder of just how vigorous these beauties can be.

If you’re looking to keep it more balanced, occasional pruning can help manage its size while encouraging fuller growth. Also, placing your Chocolate Mist where it gets ample sunlight and room to spread can help maintain harmony among your plants. If you'd like, we’d be happy to share some pruning tips or recommend companion plants that thrive alongside it.

Thanks again for your thoughtful review, and happy gardening adventures!

splendid fall blooming

Brings Absolutely beautiful contrast to the fall garden. Small babys breath clusters of white flowers on purplish tinged stems and leaves, good for cut flowers. In addition to the website review, I recommend pinching the plant back when it is about 8 inches or so and one again after that to avoid legginess and flopping and create more flowering. Keep in mind that this will delay the flowering a week to 2 after it normally would.

Dear Simone,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with the Chocolate Mist Flower! We truly appreciate the time you took to detail how it adds such stunning contrast to your fall garden. Your recommendation to pinch back the stems to prevent legginess and encourage more blooms is incredibly helpful, and we’re sure fellow gardeners will find your advice invaluable—especially with the useful note about the slight delay in flowering time.

For anyone looking to follow your great tip, pinching back at around 8 inches and again later can indeed promote a fuller, more vibrant plant while improving the overall shape. You might also find that ensuring consistent watering and appropriate sunlight enhances its performance even further. If you ever want more curated tips or have other seasonal plant questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to us!

Dear Simone,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with the Chocolate Mist Flower! We’re thrilled to hear how beautifully it contrasts in your fall garden and that its delicate clusters also make lovely cut flowers. Your recommendation about pinching the plant back at 8 inches and then again to prevent legginess and encourage more blooms is excellent advice and something other gardeners will surely find helpful. You're right that this practice may delay flowering slightly—but it’s a great trade-off for a fuller, more vibrant display.
