Every yard needs a superstar plant, but we'll let you in on a secret. Some showy plants require very little care. They'll look amazing, but you won't have to do much at all! Chief Bloodgood™ Siberian Dogwood (Cornus alba 'Chblzam') is a perfect example! This all-arounder has beautiful features in every season. It grows very quickly but stays smaller than other Red Twigged Dogwoods.
Let's start with the gorgeous winter color on the young, dormant stems. As the rest of your landscape takes a break, Chief Bloodgood™ fires up visual interest. You'll want to place these shrubs where you'll see the fiery color from inside your home.
This petite, vigorous and fast-growing selection of Red Twigged Dogwood is a great choice for wildlife. Butterflies love the flat, white flower clusters in spring. Both you, and your local songbirds will appreciate the densely held, green summer foliage. They'll be a welcome privacy screen for you, and a nesting site for the birds. You won't eat the blue-white berries in fall, but the birds will! And the birds won't care about the excellent orange, red, and yellow fall colors. But you'll be amazed at the outstanding, yearly fall foliage display.
Planting and Application:
Use Chief Bloodgood™ as the beautiful leaves fall, and you'll start seeing the red winter stems. They look incredible against a white blanket of snow. Pop them against evergreens and Ornamental Grass for an even more effective landscape feature.
Chief Bloodgood™ can tolerate soils that are sometimes wet for a short period of time. This shrub is perfect for lakefront property and at the water's edge. Use it along the edge of newly created Rain Gardens to filter runoff before it flows down the storm drains.
Use this excellent shrub just about anywhere. You'll be so pleased with the performance and ornamental qualities of this superior selection. A single shrub can provide a fabulous anchor for your foundation planting. Plant 10 feet away from the corner of your house for an easy, attractive look in all seasons. Be sure to include it as an accent in your mixed shrub borders. It makes a hard-working backdrop for perennial borders, as well.
Create a screening hedge to boost your privacy along your patio, or fence line or to trap snow along your driveway as snow fencing. Add Chief Bloodgood™ to the sunny side of windbreaks and shelterbelts to boost the winter interest. It looks especially beautiful along the edge of a woodland. Plant several shrubs 3 feet apart on center. Measure from the center of one to the center of the next. Use these pretty, low-maintenance shrubs as mass plantings for commercial and residential properties. Plant in a zig-zagging, staggered pattern and mulch between the shrubs. Keep new mass plantings weeded until the shrubs grow together. It won't take long!
Use bright red stem cuttings in many ways. You'll want to include that brilliant color in your Holiday decorations. Be sure to add them to outdoor container arrangements that will last from November through March.

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Plant Dogwoods in full sun for the best color. It will grow in a partial shade position, but you'll get the best color with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day. Chief Bloodgood™ will perform beautifully in well-drained soil. However, it is widely adaptable to most soils, including those that might be wet on occasion. Provide a moderate amount of water on a regular basis. This is especially important for young plants in their first season. Use the Finger Test to determine if your plant needs water. Poke your finger into the soil to the 2nd knuckle. If the soil is moist, skip watering that day. If it is getting dry, then it's time to water it.
Mulch with a layer 3 to 4 inches deep to 3 feet outside of the canopy to ensure the root stays cool in the hot summer. In fall, renewal pruning a few of the oldest, thickest branches down to the ground. Use these in your Holiday and winter décor. Leave the young, thin stems for the best, brightest winter color. By not shearing, you, your songbirds and pollinators will still enjoy the flowers and fruit! You'll love the show!
