Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Shipping

To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

*If you have found your zone already, it will be highlighted in the table below.

Red splashed, Chick Charms® GIANTS Copper Canyon PPAF Hardy Succulent (Sempervivum x 'Copper Canyon') is a gorgeous spiked and symmetrical succulent with incredible two-tone pointed, fleshy leaves! The rounded 'hens' of these Hens-and-Chicks have blood-red tips and centers that fade to a coppery red on older leaves.

Copper Canyon forms rounded rosettes that are slow-growing and orderly rosettes that grow to a maximum of 3 inches in height but can reach 6 - 9 inches wide! Everyone will want a closer look at the red-stained pointed leaves that form concentric circles from its center.

These are Hardy Succulents are surprisingly cold-resistant outdoors! Doing just fine throughout USDA growing zones 3 through 9, they are excellent container plants outdoors, and some even like to sneak one indoors in a sunny window as a xeric houseplant. When in bloom, pinkish flowers form upon slender stems in the summer and rise a couple of inches above the rosette for pollinators and your enjoyment!

Planting and Application:

Sempervivum are colorful additions to the Rock garden and crevice gardens in rock and retaining walls! They form dense colonies like their Hens-and-Chicks cousins! Fantastic xeric little plants and groundcovers that look best grouped and massed for vivid color at the front of the garden.

Pot up in a fancy container, mix with other succulents, or group together for the biggest color show! Use a decorative pot or strawberry pot, or even a hanging planter on your porch, patio or balcony garden! Even indoors as houseplants, these little plants are gorgeous little accents! Try potting up in a container, Kokedama, or display on a ;wall or desk! What a lovely gift!

  • Symmetrical Rosettes of Blood-Red & Green
  • Rounded Clumping & Spreading Hardy Plants
  • Low Growing, Slow & Steady Growth
  • Great in Containers & Planters - Indoors & Out
  • Groundcover, Crevice & Rock Gardens, Xeric & Garden Edging

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Hardy Succulent plants are xeric, but they still need water to thrive. Basking in full sun without shrinking, these thrive in very little water once established. Winter hardy, these Alpine natives grow in any rocky foothold possible! During the summer heat, they will need to be watered more frequently. Allow plants to dry out slightly between waterings, but don't overwater. Plant in full sun outside and bright indirect sun indoors. Grown Hens and Chicks in low to moderate fertility, even thriving in poor fertility, as long as it is well-drained soil.

Overwintering & Maintaining Hardy Succulents

Sempervivum produces its own babies after only 1 season, gradually replacing themselves over time every few years. After 3 years and having produced many baby plants, a Sempervivum grows a tall center stalk that blooms before the plant dies. Every few years divide your clumps and remove the old, less vigorous rosettes that have flowered that summer in late autumn to keep the plant rejuvenated and the clumps clean.

Although winter hardy, the key to success is sharply drained soil and protection from a site that will receive too much water. Sometimes your container-grown Sempervivum will appreciate moving the pots against the east side of the house during winter which will help reduce the water in late fall and winter.

  • Full Sun & Bright Indirect Indoors
  • Low Water Needs
  • Fast Draining Soil
  • Clean Mounds As Needed
  • Protect In Winter
