The most popular Sweet Cherry, the Bing Cherry (Prunus avium 'Bing') is positively one of the finest and most famous of the Sweet Cherry varieties. A cross between the Black Republican and an unknown parent, the variety was discovered in the orchards of Seth Lewelling of Milwaukie Oregon, and has been adored by many ever since!

In early spring, Bing Cherry will be positively glowing when it is covered in dazzling white flowers. Watch as the bees and butterflies arrive to savor these lovely blooms! Later in the spring and during the summer, the Bing Cherry will have bright green leaves, a wonderful contrast to the deep garnet, almost-black fruit to follow in mid-June.

Bing produces is a very large, dark, delicious, cherry with smooth, glossy skin and has set the standard for flavor for over 100 years. The fruit is firm, extremely juicy and has what has become the classic, rich, sweet cherry flavor. Harvest when ripe, as they will not ripen further once picked.

Bing's commercial success is also based on its heavy production. Dependable year after year come mid-season, Bing's crop of large Sweet Cherries is always abundant! Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 5 to 9, these trees can be trained at any height needed to best suit your landscape. However, unpruned Bing Cherry trees can reach 16-20 feet in height and spread 12-15 feet wide.

Planting and Application:

Bing is a perfect cherry for use in baking and preserves. However, your family and friends will not be able to resist eating these mouth-watering juicy cherries right off the tree. High in antioxidants, the Bing Cherry is a refreshing, healthy snack on a hot summer day.

The fantastic spring floral show makes this moderate-sized tree the perfect front yard specimen or garden anchor. The summer shade over your patio and seating areas, or shading your garden beds is lush and filtered by the handsome foliage.

Mid-sized trees, Bing is perfect for tucking into an existing orchard or smaller home garden! A great pollinator for other Cherry trees, it is also pollinated by many other varieties as well! Boosting yields for all your other Cherries!

The Bing Cherry does require cross-pollination, so another Cherry tree is needed to produce fruit. Many cherry varieties will act as pollinators for the Bing. So if you don't have room for two trees, try this high-density planting trick and more in our Garden Blog. Bing's best companions are the Black Tatarian, Stella, Republican, Van, Sweetheart, and Montmorency Sour Cherry trees.

  • Large, Glossy, Dark Red Firm & Meaty
  • Smothered in Dazzling White Flowers - Attracts Pollinators
  • Great Pollinator Tree for Other Varieties
  • Rich & Juicy Flavor!
  • Ripens in Mid-Season - Dependable Heavy Production
  • Fruit is High in Antioxidants
  • Baking, Fresh Eating & Preserves

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Cherry Tree care is easy! Requiring full sun, these fruit trees produce the largest yields and best crops in 6 hours of sunlight a day or more. Plant in well-drained soils that are fertile and enriched. Cherry trees grow in a wide range of soil types as long as they don't become soggy. A generous layer of mulch helps retain soil moisture as well as insulate the root system from heat and chill.

Fruiting trees require average moisture throughout the growing season and while many are drought-tolerant, it's best to protect your investment with consistent watering. Supply a 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch chips over the entire root system for improved insulation and moisture regulation. Prune fruiting Cherry trees in late winter to open the canopy to sunlight and airflow, to remove dead, damaged or diseased limbs. Prune Cherry trees in spring to shape, and remove water growth or suckers.

  • Full Sun
  • Regular Moderate Moisture
  • Rich Well-Drained Soil
  • Appreciates Mulched Beds
  • Pollinate with Black Tatarian, Stella, Republican, Van, Sweetheart, and Montmorency
  • 700-800 Chill Hours

This popular, well-loved Cherry tree would make a great addition to any edible landscape both in form and fruit. Sweet Cherry trees are one of the most desirable fruit varieties for the home garden! Our Cherry trees are always in high demand and are on quality rootstock. Quantities are limited and Bing will sell out soon. Happier than expected!

I bought both the Bing and Rainier trees (~4 ft tall) for cross pollination. When they arrived I was a little concerned since they looked scrawny and not much roots. But after just one month they had really branched out, had lots of big leaves and you could see the increase in overall size. Wow. Wish I could post a picture so you could see how well they did. They did seem to take a while to get since it was 3-4 weeks after the deal planting time for my zone before I got them so I would have welcomed a little better communications other than "sometime after the start of shipping for your zone".

Hi Cathy,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with your Bing and Rainier trees! We’re thrilled to hear they’ve thrived and grown so well despite that initial 'scrawny' look—it’s always amazing to see how resilient and happy plants can become in a little time. Your dedication to cross-pollination clearly pays off!

We appreciate your thoughtful feedback about the shipping timeline and communication. We understand how the delay, especially post-planting time for your zone, could be a bit frustrating. Your comments help us improve how we set expectations and provide clearer updates moving forward, so you and other gardeners feel better informed throughout the process.

If you’d ever like advice on the next steps for nurturing your trees or enhancing cross-pollination, feel free to reach out—we’re happy to help.
