The Chanticleer Pear tree (Pyrus calleryana, 'Glens Form'), also known as Callery Pears, is a space-saving tree with gorgeous spring blooms and fall color! Known for its tight, narrow, pyramidal form, the Chanticleer is also a thornless variety!

New growth shows a reddish tint. It displays a heavy abundance of single white flowers in the spring that pollinators adore! These Ornamental Pear trees feature a growth habit that is dense, evenly branched canopies that fill out with crisp glossy green foliage! Some specimens appear almost columnar in habit

Oval, glossy green leaves turn an attractive reddish-orange to purple in the autumn that accents the small fruits that can form if another Callery Pear is nearby to pollinate your Chanticleer tree. These are snapped up by hungry birds!

This deciduous tree is a true four-season tree with white flowers in early spring and shiny, dark green foliage in summer that changes to long-lasting, dramatic shades of red and purple in mid to late autumn! In winter the tight, narrow form is a refined silhouette in the snowy winter landscape!

Chanticleer is an improved cultivar of the old Bradford Pear trees also known as Callery Pears, and also goes by the names 'Cleveland Select', 'Glen's Form', 'Select', and 'Stone Hill'. Its low-maintenance, hardy nature and beautiful year-round appeal make it a great choice as an ornamental landscape tree!

Planting and Application:

This beautiful specimen tree makes a perfect lawn or street tree for front yards where it is allowed to be grown. Use a single tree to anchor the corner of your home in a landscape bed. Or, plant one on either side of large-scale front entries as a gracious welcome home.

Plant these Ornamental columnar trees at least 15 feet away from the foundation of your house and 8 feet away from the curb. This will give the root system enough room to develop.

Flowering Pear is a versatile and space-saving addition to almost any landscape. This is a hardy ornamental tree with year-round appeal! Because this is a columnar tree growing more tall than broad, it nestles neatly into a narrow spot between other plants or looks great in rows along a street or sidewalk.

Plant them 15 feet apart, measuring from one tree's center trunk to the next tree's center trunk. Their tall, oval shapes will quickly grow together into a single, continuous screen. March them down the length of your driveway spaced at equal distances to create gorgeous curb appeal. These make fabulous screening backdrops along the property line!

  • Clouds of White Spring Flowering
  • Crisp, Clean Pyramidal Growth Habit - Nearly Columnar
  • Glossy Green Foliage & Thornless Stems
  • Wonderful Purple & Red-Orange Fall Color
  • Specimens & Accents, Foundation Anchors & Rows

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Chanticleer Pear trees are very hardy and fast-growing, and are an excellent choice for a trouble-free, beautiful addition in any landscape situation! Just plant in full sun and well-drained soil of any type and you'll have success! Provide new trees with regular watering and a 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch to hold moisture and insulate the root system.

The tree should be pruned after flowering if needed. Do prune out any secondary leaders that may develop as the tree is young, remove suckers, and water growth. Select your preferred leader in the dense crown and remove the other secondary leader completely.

You'll get great results even in heat or pollution if you provide even watering while the tree is getting established in your soil.

BEWARE RABBITS

Excellent tree but when they are young make sure you protect the trunk in the winter.Snow makes it difficult for the rabbits to find food and they will peel the bark from the trunk like a bannana. I lost three trees that way

Dear Jones,

Thank you so much for sharing your valuable experience with the Chanticleer Flowering Pear Tree. We truly appreciate your honesty and are sorry to hear about the challenges you faced with rabbits damaging your young trees. Protecting the trunk during those vulnerable early years is indeed crucial, especially in winter when food sources are scarce for wildlife.

Your tip to take special measures to safeguard the trunk is spot on. We recommend using rabbit guards or tree wraps made specifically for this purpose, which can provide a physical barrier against nibbling. Additionally, applying some natural repellents around the base may help deter rabbits without harming the tree or local wildlife. You might also consider mulch or additional ground cover to reduce soil exposure in snowy months.

If you ever want, we’d be happy to offer personalized guidance tailored to your region or set up reminders to protect your trees as seasons change. Your experience helps other gardeners prepare better, so thank you again for your insight.

To greener days ahead,

love this tree and this nursery

I orderd 2 bare root chanticleer pear trees fall of 09,(they were under 5 feet tall) they came in the spring of 2010, when they arrived my fiancee laughed and said we will be digging those dead sticks up in no time. I followed all of the directions to the letter. In no time at all they had buds then flowers then leaves. We protected the trunk and even the horrible winter didnt damage them. This spring they came right to life and i'm happy to report that its mid May and they are already taller than me probably closer to 6 feet if not more.

Dear Jones,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with the Chanticleer Flowering Pear Tree. We appreciate you taking the time to provide such insightful feedback. It’s wonderful to hear that you love the tree’s qualities, but we’re truly sorry to learn about the struggles you faced with rabbits damaging the trunks during winter.

You’re absolutely right—rabbits can be quite persistent in harsh weather, especially when snow limits their food sources. Wrapping tree trunks with protective guard tubes or hardware cloth can be very effective in preventing bark damage. You might also consider gently applying repellents made specifically for wildlife around the base during vulnerable months. Planting rabbit-resistant ground covers allowing shelter elsewhere may help divert their attention as well.

For future seasons, we have care resources and protective gear suggestions on our website that could bolster wintertime survival for your young trees.

Thank you again for sharing tip-worthy advice to help all of us grow and protect these beautiful plants.
