The Pummelo is an ancestor of the Grapefruit. It produces enormous, sweet fruit that can weigh up to nine pounds! The Chandler Pummelo Tree (Citrus maxima 'Chandler') is a fantastic fruit featuring a smooth glossy yellow rind usually with a pink blush. The flesh is juicy, very sweet, and a beautiful deep pink to red color.

Typically flowers late winter to early spring outdoors, but when grown indoors may flower seasonally. The Chandler Grapefruit is an evergreen with large, glossy leaves. Chandler is a vigorous growing tree that blooms enormous fragrant flowers before the fruit appears. You'll adore the display of dazzling blossoms and large yellow gems backdropped by the handsome evergreen foliage!

The fruit is early to mature and ready to harvest in the fall. It's very similar to the traditional Grapefruit but with some distinct bonuses. Aside from its noticeably larger size, and exotic, sweet, juicy flavor, it is much easier to segment than the traditional Grapefruit!

Protected by a thick layer of rind, these rounded fruits are beautiful to behold and the tree is highly ornamental when in bloom and when dripping in enormous fruit! Your Chandler will be turning heads in any season!

How to Use Chandler Pummelo Tree In The Landscape

The Chandler can be planted anywhere. In warmer climates place it somewhere in the yard that you can enjoy its stunning blooms. In colder climates plant it in a container on the patio or deck to move it indoors before the first frost.

Even city dwellers can enjoy the benefits of Chandler! Plant it in a container on the balcony, or keep it year-round as a houseplant. No matter where you live, you can enjoy this huge, sweet, healthy fruit!

Space-saving and easy to harvest in size, these ornamental trees can be pruned smaller yet so that even the tiniest lots, balconies, patios, rooftops and postage-stamp gardens can grow this exotic fruit! Also allowing Northern gardeners to easily bring their trees into the greenhouse or home to keep in front of a sunny window for the cold winters!

These ornamental flowering and evergreen trees grow wider than tall for easy harvest. Also casting lush shade, Chandler cools your seating areas around pools, patios and terraces. Just don't sit directly underneath one when the fruit is ripe.

#ProPlantTips For Care

Citrus fruit trees require full sun, as much as you can give them! For indoor trees, provide a grow light to extend their daylight hours, especially during the lean months of winter. Hardy in the ground for zones 9 and 10.

Water moderately and allow Citrus to dry out slightly between waterings and greatly dislike soggy soil. Plant your tree in soil that will allow water to drain quickly. Providing extra drainage holes to keep water from building up when planting in containers and planters.

Plant your tree in a loose medium that is very well-enriched, and fertilize 3 to 4 times a year with a good Citrus tree fertilizer or acid-loving plant fertilizer, especially when planted in pots and planters.

Although Citrus can grow year-round in warmer regions (zones 9 and 10), they can also thrive in colder areas (zones 4 to 7) as long as the tree is brought indoors before the first frost of winter.

In zone 8, you can cover your tree in the event of a cold snap or unexpected overnight freeze. Citrus will need to be planted in a sheltered spot to avoid the worst of the chill, and not planted in a low area that collects cold air. If a spot like that is unavailable, or you are in a chill-prone climate, then you are safer planting Citrus Trees in a large, deep container with wheels to easily move them to a protected location or indoors when needed.

In cold growing zones, begin slowly acclimating your tree indoors in the fall, or into a protected location, eventually moving your tree inside. Indoor plants need a bright indirect sun window, greenhouse, sunroom, or enclosed patio for the winter. In spring, reverse this process and begin acclimating your tree to again be back out in the full sun all summer. This reduces stress and leaf drop.
