Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Full sun is essential for the best berry production and deep green foliage. Aim for at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily; while it can handle some afternoon shade in hot climates, too much shade results in fewer flowers and tart fruit.
  • Soil: These plants crave acidic soil with a pH between 4.5 and 5.5. If you have heavy clay, plant them in raised beds or large containers using a mix of peat moss and pine bark to ensure the roots can breathe and stay moist without rotting.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, keep the soil consistently moist like a wrung out sponge to help the root system expand. Mature plants are more resilient but still require about an inch of water per week during the fruiting season to prevent the berries from shriveling or dropping prematurely. Inconsistent watering often leads to a smaller harvest and stressed, yellowing leaves.

Pruning Tips

Sapphire Cascade® produces fruit on one year old wood, so you should prune in late winter while the plant is still dormant. Focus on removing any dead or crossing branches and thinning out the oldest canes to make room for vigorous new growth. How to Use Bushel & Berry® Sapphire Cascade® Blueberry in the Landscape

Although this is a self-pollinating variety, you'll want to add several for the largest harvest. Mix with Bushel & Berry® Midnight Cascade® in an alternating series of baskets along your porch.

You can also consider this plant a "Spiller" and use at the edge of oversized containers to soften the look. Use a compact variety like Bushel & Berry® Peach Sorbet® at the main "Thiller" in your Blueberry container garden.

These plants like acidic soil with a soil pH below 5.5; so pot them in ericaceous planting mix designed for acid loving plants. For long-term success, we recommend you start collecting pH neutral rainwater to water them.

Please make sure the pots or baskets you are using to grow Sapphire Cascade have plenty of drainage holes. Keep pots up off of your patio with bricks or clay pot feet.
