How to Use Brunswick Blueberry in the Landscape

These compact plants develop into dense plants, which can be used in several ways to beautify your property. Try them as a hard-working groundcover to suppress weeds and make the most of wide, open areas.

They can also be used at the edge of garden beds. Raise up your plantings for an easy harvest.

Create a solid low hedge by planting one to two feet apart on center. Measure from the center of one to the center of the next.

Add additional rows behind the first to fill in, as needed. Mulch with pine straw or pine mulch, and keep them weeded as they grow together and touch.

Blueberries need acidic soil with a pH between 4.5 and 5.5. In areas where Azaleas grow well, there is likely no need to amend your soil.

If you test your soil, and it's alkaline, grow your Brunswick in containers. It's a good idea to capture neutral pH rainwater to use on your plants.

Decorate your patio, porch or balcony with sweet superfruit. Use a wide pot to accommodate their shallow root system. Today's pots likely will need additional drainage holes drilled in the bottom.

Brunswick Blueberries can be grown in either full sun or partial shade. They require at least four hours of sunlight a day.

Well-drained, acidic soil is best. Test your soil regularly to ensure a productive harvest. If needed, add handfuls of peat moss and sulphur to the root zone when planting.

It's a good idea to start early with soil amendments, as it can take a while to reduce pH. Test often to make sure you aren't overdoing it.

Container-grown plants can give an advantage to gardeners in alkaline soil areas. Control the pH with an acid-lover soil mix, and incorporate 25 percent peat moss or pathway bark in the medium.

During the first year, and each year during fruit development, apply a medium amount of water on a regular basis. Mulch cuts down on surface evaporation and helps keep the root system cool and moist.

Prune in early spring to remove the oldest stems. The goal is to keep the youngest stems, which are most productive.

Commercial producers mow their Lowbush Blueberries in rotation down to an inch high. At home, you can simply remove a few the oldest woodier stems on each plant every few years to ensure a bountiful harvest.

In early spring, fertilize with a slow-release formula for acid-loving plants. Follow the application rate on the bottle.
