Dee Runk Boxwood: Columnar Evergreen Variety

The Dee Runk Boxwood (Buxus sempervirens 'Dee Runk') is an elegant, upright broadleaf evergreen shrub with a naturally columnar, pyramidal growth habit. With its dense, glossy green foliage and striking form, Dee Runk Boxwood delivers year-round beauty and functionality.

It won't be long before you'll luxuriate in the lush, fine-textured foliage of this taller-growing Boxwood. It stays compact and narrow and will naturally grow a wider bottom than the top. Dee Runk is actually a speedy little grower for a Boxwood - can grow up to 6 inches a year. As the plants develop, they take on the look of living exclamation points!

What Makes Dee Runk Boxwood Special?

  • Unique Columnar Shape: Dee Runk naturally grows in an upright, narrow form, making it perfect for vertical accents or tight spaces.
  • Year-Round Evergreen Foliage: The glossy dark green leaves remain vibrant throughout the year, providing consistent structure and color.
  • Low Maintenance: This adaptable shrub thrives in a variety of conditions and requires minimal pruning to maintain its elegant shape.
  • Versatile Use: Perfect for formal landscapes, container plantings, and modern garden designs.
  • Hardy and Resilient: Tolerates a wide range of climates in USDA zones 6-8 and is moderately drought-tolerant once established. Dee Runk even has excellent deer resistance!

How To Use Dee Runk Boxwood In Your Landscape

This stately variety is perfect for adding height and structure to gardens, landscapes, or formal designs. Ideal for narrow spaces or as a vertical accent, this shrub is a favorite among gardeners and landscapers alike.

Formal Entryways: Flank doorways, gates, or pathways with these tall, narrow evergreens for a grand and polished look.

Vertical Accents: Add height and dimension to garden beds or borders with Dee Runk's upright form. Try a row as a backdrop to highlight your gardens!

Foundations: Create excitement with this architectural plant. Can you think of an easier way to boost your home's curb appeal than to plant one on either side of your front door?

Container Plantings: Showcase its sleek shape in decorative pots for patios, decks, or balcony gardens. Dee Runk is super space-saving and can be included almost anywhere!

Hedges and Privacy Screens: Plant in a row for a unique and space-saving hedge that offers year-round coverage. For a solid hedge, plant them 2 feet apart on center. You'll measure from the center of one to the center of the next. Allow them to grow together as a single plant.

Mixed Borders: Pair with lower-growing shrubs and perennials for added contrast and drama in the landscape. Dee Runk makes the perfect partner for small, rounded shrubs or perennials. Try them near classic Bobo® Hydrangea, colorful Goldmound Spirea, or even the rustic Denim n' Lace Russian Sage.

Boxwood Care & Maintenance

Plant Boxwood with Nature Hills Root Booster for lifelong symbiotic root system support.

  • Sunlight Needs: Performs well in full sun to partial shade. In hotter climates, some afternoon shade is beneficial.
  • Soil Requirements: Boxwood prefers well-drained, moist soil. Avoid overly wet, compacted and clay areas.
  • Watering: Keep the roots soil evenly moist during the first growing season. Once established, it can handle short periods of drought.
  • Pruning Tips: Minimal pruning is needed right after flowering to shape and encourage dense growth.
  • Mulching: Apply a 3-4 inch layer of bark chip mulch around the root system to help conserve moisture and regulate soil temperature.
  • Winter Care: Spray plants subjected to drying northern winds with wilt-stop. All broadleaf evergreens need a long drink before winter to prevent windburn.

Easy Evergreen Brilliance!

These special plants add so much to your landscape, without taking up much real estate. Take a good look around at your landscape. Where could you use a year-round pop of dark green color, and the drama of a strongly vertical accent?
