Maximize your space with fruiting plants in a modern Edible Landscaping. Whether you incorporate Blueberry Bushes in your landscape design or as a fruiting specimen - you'll love growing your own fresh ingredients just a few steps from your kitchen!
One of the best varieties for reliable, large harvests of sweet and tasty fruit is Bluegold Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum 'Bluegold'). With a convenient concentrated ripening time, mid-season Bluegold is a Highbush Blueberry that delivers pounds of fresh fruit in only a few "pickings".
The medium to large, firm berries are exposed outside the foliage instead of hidden beneath. Making it easy for you to watch in wonder as your bushy Bluegold ripens from bell-shaped blooms in spring to sky-blue blueberries in mid-season.
Well-known for superior fruit quality, go ahead and eat your fill fresh! Add to your bowl of oatmeal or Greek Yogurt and a drizzle of locally-sourced raw honey. Save some for baking too! Gain serious brownie points at the office with fresh, homemade muffins.
Amaze the guys and gals at the next coffee klatch with an old-fashioned slump or cobbler. Or prepare, then freeze pies for "on demand" desserts any time of year.
You'll also want to freeze bags and bags of berries for the taste of summer in your blended smoothie. Recent studies have shown that these tasty small fruits can help you lose that stubborn abdominal fat, along with a host of other health benefits.
They are elegant plants, as well. You'll love their good looks from the beautiful white blooms, attractive foliage, large clusters of sky-blue berries, and glowing orange-red fall color!
People rave about the sweetly balanced taste of Bluegold berries. Their well-deserved reputation as a prolific variety is something to brag about!
Although they are self-pollinating, you will get a larger crop with another variety of Highbush Blueberry plants nearby. Plant with other Blueberry varieties like Bluecrop, Jersey, or Reka, or try an early-season Patriot and a late season Elliott for a long season of fresh fruit.
How to Use Bluegold Blueberry in the Landscape
You'll want to get your soil tested if you'd like to grow Bluegold in the ground. They have a specific soil pH requirement on the acidic side between 4.5 to 5.5. If there are Piney woods near your home, or you see the brilliant spring display of Rhododendrons or Lupines in the wild, you'll probably be just fine!
Otherwise, you may have alkaline soil. Grow Bluegold in raised beds and control the soil environment. Why not try a long row of Blueberries as your homes foundation planting? You'll spark conversation and boost your food security at the same time!
Take a look around your neighborhood. Are the cute newlyweds down the street really ripping out their foundation planting to put in Blueberry plants, Serviceberry, and Aronia bushes with a Peach tree as an anchor? Yes...they are!
Edible Landscaping is a huge garden trend that will only get bigger! Take advantage of the beauty and bounty delivered by Bluegold. Create a hedgerow by planting your fruiting shrubs four to six feet apart on center. You'll measure from the center of one to the center of the next.
Enjoy the glowing, orange, and red fall foliage. Plant them to the west of your patio to catch the final rays of sun each day. You'll feel like a satisfied ruler overlooking their realm, as you relax on your lounger!

#ProPlantTips for Care
Bluegold performs best in full sun to partial shade. Give it at least four hours of direct sun a day, with a preference for morning sun. You will get the most fruit with a pollinator and planted in full sun.
Well-drained soil is critical. Plant in a raised bed if you need to improve the drainage of your site. Or, use them in containers. All plants love a 3-4 inch layer of mulch around their root systems, try using pathway bark, peat moss, pine straw, or pine needles.
Ensure their shallow root system has the space it needs to grow by creating a raised bed or berm, 18-24 inches high, and planting in that mound.
Give plants a moderate amount of water on a regular basis, especially during fruit development. We recommend collecting rainwater for Blueberry bushes because of its neutral pH.
In early spring, fertilize with a formula for acid-loving plants according to the directions on the label. You'll want to test to ensure you maintain acidic soil. Read about pruning your Blueberry in our Garden Blog!
