Growing Zones
A highly sought-after deep purple-pink semi-cactus bloom, the Blue Record Dahlia (Dahlia 'Blue Record') may not be blue, but its cheerful dwarf stature and explosion of color will leave you anything but! The spiky blooms stand upright above the greenery and show off their vivid coloration, bringing in pollinators and Hummingbirds from near and far.
Flowering from midsummer until frost in many cases, these are incredible show-stoppers in the sun garden! Backed by a mound of lacy, pointed glossy green foliage and strong dark stems, Blue Record is the ideal thriller for your bouquets and floral arrangements!
Blue Record Dahlia can grow in all growing zones as a seasonal/annual accent plant but can remain in the ground year-round as a perennial bulb in USDA growing zones 8 to 10. Growing just 24-36 inches tall, these smaller Dahlia spread about 18-24 inches wide at maturity.
Landscape Application:
Blue Record Dahlia shines among your front yard landscaping beds and the mailbox garden to garner all the attention of passersby and neighbors! The showy form and color are sure to add that special oompf in front porch urns as a thriller or as accent plants along your front foundation hedge!
Add some zing to a Cottage garden or mixed Perennial border with Blue Record Dahlias as groupings or rows that wind through the other plants! Rose gardens gain showy companions and Dahlia are must-haves for the Pollinator and Cutting garden!
Any porch or patio becomes awash in color when you add these showy blooms to your planters and mixed container gardens!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Plant Dahlia bulbs in full sun for the best growth and the most blooms! The morning sun is best due to its drying power to clear the leaves of dew. Delicate Dahlia foliage also appreciates afternoon shade in hot climates and everywhere they love good air circulation! The key to successfully growing Dahlias is well-enriched soil with regular fertilizer. It is recommended that you add 3-4 inches of arborist bark mulch for consistent soil moisture and protect the roots.
Even though they are often referred to as 'bulbs' the roots of the Dahlia are tubers like potatoes and sprout from the 'eyes'. Plant Dahlia tubers between 10-12 inches deep in loosened, enriched soil. These modified roots need to be planted in very well-drained soil that won't become soggy. Tubers planted directly in the ground will start to sprout in about 3 weeks depending on your climate and weather.
Deadhead regularly for continuous rebloom and trim back yellowed foliage in the fall. Dig up the tubers for the winter. Store these bulbs in a cool, dark place for the winter.
Forming from bulb-like tubers, these perennials need protection from freezing temperatures. While Dahlia can be planted in all growing zones, climates with cold winters need to "lift" the tubers in the fall before the ground freezes and stored for the winter. In frost-free winters, Dahlia can be kept in-ground all year round.
