Growing Zones
We love the reblooming, deliciously fragrant Blue Moon Wisteria (Wisteria macrostachya 'Blue Moon') and now it's even better in a single-trunked tree form! Blue Moon features those amazing, nearly foot-long racemes of sweetly fragrant, purple and blue flowers everyone knows and loves!
Also known as Blue Moon Kentucky Wisteria, this is an excellent American Wisteria vine that can rebloom from June until the first frost! The flowers are fragrant and are born in enormous clusters that can be up to a foot long. They hang from this vigorous plant almost like clusters of grapes.
The flowers have a lot of purple on the outside of the buds and grow in a fabulous mix of blues and purples. The colors are darker when they first open and can fade as the flowers age!
Blue Moon can flower 3 times in a single season. It's a very versatile plant that loves the sun and will perform beautifully with little care needed. The stems twine counter-clockwise and grow quickly, up to 15 to 20 feet! This is a must-have accent for the garden throughout USDA growing zones 3 to 9!
Planting and Application:
This is a Wisteria vine that has been expertly trained into a single-trunked tree form. Given something to grow on, it will act as a vine and climb.
Blue Moon Wisteria Trees are perfect for decorating your front yard foundation plantings or backyard seating areas with outstanding flowers dripping down and long viny branches swaying the breeze!
Wisteria looks incredible as a stand-alone specimen in the sun or as a small ornamental weeping tree as the focal point of a landscape bed! You'll love this romantic cascading element in your landscape. It will soften angles and hard surfaces and become a magnificent centerpiece!
Imagine hosting a get-together in your outdoor kitchen when Blue Moon is blooming. This dramatic display will be the conversation starter you need to get your guests mingling together. Children will remember this plant fondly. What an incredible way to introduce them to the wonder of nature.
People love using Wisteria flowering vine for a sophisticated look that calls attention to high-profile, sunny areas! You'll want to enjoy this experience for years, so give it a "permanent" (and prominent) spot in your garden! Try uplighting the canopy with small exterior lights at night to amplify the impact.
Carefully train your plant as a flat pruned espalier against a wall, but be warned, this is by nature a vine and will climb when given the option. You may have seen them planted on either side of an entrance and trained up and over the top for a very dramatic effect - Especially when in bloom and smothered by pollinators!
- Rich Purple Foliage With Frosted, Crinkled Surface
- Wiry, Slender Black Stems & Darker Leaf Undersides
- Ornate Unevenly Toothy Leaf Margins
- Creamy Pinkish Coral Tall & Airy Flowering Stems
- Pollinator-Friendly & Attracts Hummingbirds Too!
- Dramatic Edging, Garden Contrast, Shaded Landscapes, & Container Focal Points!
#ProPlantTips for Care:
It is important to site your Wisteria Tree in a sunny, well-drained location, as they grow fast and will quickly develop many new roots and develop a lot of top growth. They are more difficult to move once planted, so pick the right spot.
Be sure that you have a heavy-duty stake to support the trunk of young trees and make sure the main trunk support is thick and solid to support the top until the trunk thickens enough to support it on its own.
It will adapt to well-drained soils but really loves moist, slightly acidic soils best. Give it a moderate amount of water on a regular basis, and arborist mulch with pine needles to keep the root systems nice and cool.
Do a light pruning right after the first set of flowers has finished to shape and maintain your plants as needed. Careful pruning is needed so the flower buds are not removed. As summer heat brings on new spires of growth, you may want to shorten them up a bit. Leave half of that new growth and that is the flowers to develop as the plant gets old enough to flower nicely.
Tips On Wisteria Flowering
Wisteria produces the most abundant flowers if you plant them in a spot that gets full sun all day long. If they do get some light shade, they can still thrive for you. The sunnier, the better!
Avoid planting directly in the lawn. Lawn fertilizers are heavy on nitrogen and may delay flowering, so please limit exposure to them by mulching a bed for your Blue Moon. Use Dr. Earth Acid Lovers Organic and Natural Premium Fertilizer following the directions on the package.
Many times, Wisteria can take years before they make flowers so a bit of patience may be needed at planting to allow the plant to develop enough wood to make some nice flowers. Although Wisteria can grow in partial shade, you simply will not see the flower power that Blue Moon can put out so keep it in those hot, sunny locations that they love best.
Blue Chinese Wisteria Tree Pruning
Decide on the mature look you want while your tree is young. Short and wide? Oval? Asymmetrical?
You can think of it as deciding on your tree's "hairstyle". Decide how long you want the branches to grow and the style that suits your tree best in your yard. Then, just give it regular trims to keep things nice, tidy, and flowering beautifully.
You have a lot of influence on how your plant looks once it's mature just by pruning the tree for shape when it's young.
Pruning is the very best method to help your tree produce flowers, too. The goal is to have plenty of nice, short flowering stems for plenty of spring blooms within the crown of your tree.
The branches will work as a framework to support the spectacular, heavy flowers. Decide which structural branches you'll keep and allow them to grow out and thicken up each season.
In late summer, you'll shape your tree for size and to reinforce that structure.
- First, manicure your tree by removing any shaggy shoots that aren't in your training plan.
- Next, prune back new growth shoots off your desired branches to the point where you are leaving about 5 leaves on those new stems coming off your main structural branch.
In late winter, it's time for another "haircut."
- First, manicure your tree by removing any shaggy shoots that aren't in your training plan. Remove any unwanted or crisscrossing branches completely, pruning them back to the structure branch or main trunk.
- Next, prune back those same shoots that you worked on last summer. This time, you'll shorten them even more. Leave 2 or 3 swollen flower buds on each shoot.
Finally, enjoy those fanciful, fragrant flowers just a few weeks later. What a joy once spring arrives!
