Why Choose Tree-Form Wisteria Over Traditional Vines?

Usually, Wisteria is a fast-growing vine, one you may have seen artistically adorning castles in Europe, wineries in Napa Valley, or those huge estates featured on Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous!

But here's a secret we've shared with so many happy customers...

You can also enjoy the amazing, fragrant flowers of Wisteria on a cute, little accent tree. We've trained this amazing plant into a knock-out, single-stem tree with a nice, sturdy trunk. Our expert growers work diligently to create a one-of-a-kind, original masterpiece for you!

This is not a tree you'll be able to ignore in full bloom. The Blue Chinese Wisteria tree is fast-growing and is widely adaptable all across the country!

What Makes Our Blue Chinese Wisteria Special?

Spectacular Color Progression

We have an excellent cultivar we've been growing for years. Changing from purple to lavender to blue, the Blue Chinese Wisteria blooms feature:

  • Dark purple buds that open to lovely icy lavender
  • Purple flowers that fade to that sought-after, magnificent blue as they age
  • A fabulous range of cool tones throughout the blooming season

Show-Stopping Spring Display!

In late spring and early summer - before the leaves appear - the tree explodes in long streams of sweet-smelling flowers that can range from sky blue to rich lavender. The elongated flower panicles can reach up to a foot in length!

This is not a tree you'll be able to ignore in full bloom. The flowers simply drip from the tree in a lavish display. Because the flowers appear before the leaves emerge, the show is even more dramatic!

Attracts Pollinators & Wildlife

What about the delicious fragrance? Everyone in the neighborhood will appreciate the sweetly scented flower clusters and the butterflies and pollinators they bring.

How To Use Blue Chinese Wisteria In Your Landscape

Maybe you've seen these beautiful trees in person, or online, and just have to have one (or more!) for yourself. People across the country are growing this tree-form Wisteria as a very special specimen plant.

Popular landscaping uses:

  • Front yard focal point - Use one or more as a perfect touch for your entrance
  • Patio accent - Place near outdoor living spaces to enjoy the fragrance
  • Privacy screen - Use in large containers placed strategically
  • Courtyard highlight - Perfect for intimate garden spaces
  • Entrance statement - Try two Blue Chinese Wisteria trees on either side of your front door for instant curb appeal!
  • Perfect for small spaces & container growing

They'll even work well in large containers. Need a pretty privacy screen? Use these special plants in large containers placed strategically to block your view. What a visual treat!

Place them where they'll be noticed. After all, you'll want to reap the glory each spring and secure your neighborhood reputation as a fantastic gardener with a green thumb.

Growing & Care Guide For Chinese Wisteria Trees

Read our #ProPlantTips for care blog about the full care guide for Wisteria Trees.

Sunlight Requirements:

They'll produce the most abundant flowers if you plant them in a spot that gets full sun all day long. In hot climates, Wisteria can handle some afternoon shade, but usually, the sunnier, the better!

  • Best flowering: Full sun all day long
  • Hot climates: Can handle some afternoon shade
  • Rule of thumb: The sunnier, the better for maximum blooms!

Watering & Soil Needs:

Baby your Wisteria a bit when you first get them planted. Water regularly using the Finger Test Method to get your new tree established. After that, it will be drought-tolerant. Check to see if your ground holds a puddle after a rain. If so, mound up topsoil 18 inches high. You can then dig a hole and plant your tree in that mounded-up soil for better drainage.

  • Soil type: Adapts to most soils but requires well-draining conditions
  • Poor drainage fix: Mound up topsoil 18 inches high and plant in the mounded soil
  • Establishment: Water regularly for the first year, then Wisteria is surprisingly drought-tolerant once it's established
  • Container growing: Use large containers with plenty of drainage holes

Give your tree plenty of room to grow. If you choose to grow Wisteria trees in a container, just make sure to use a large container with plenty of drainage holes.

Fertilizing Tips:

Important: Avoid using lawn fertilizer near your tree, as too much nitrogen will feed the leaves, not the flowers, delaying the beautiful blooms.

Deer Resistance:

Blue Chinese Wisteria is a plant that deer seem to leave alone unless desperate.

Essential Wisteria Pruning Guide For Maximum Blooms

You have a lot of influence on how your plant looks once it's mature, just by pruning the tree for shape when it's young. Think of it as deciding on your tree's "hairstyle".

Late Summer Pruning (August-September):

  1. Remove any shaggy shoots not in your training plan
  2. Prune back new growth shoots to 5 leaf buds on stems coming off main branches
  3. Shape the tree for size and reinforce the structure
  4. Nip out suckers coming up from the roots and any side shoots emerging from the trunk

Late Winter Pruning (February-March):

  1. Remove unwanted or crisscrossing branches completely
  2. Shorten summer-pruned shoots to 2-3 swollen flower buds
  3. Enjoy spectacular flowers just weeks later!

Support For Young Trees:

For the first year or two, use a sturdy stake to help your young tree stand upright. Those heavy flower clusters need support until the trunk strengthens!

Frequently Asked Questions

How big does a Blue Chinese Wisteria tree get?

  • 10-15 feet tall and wide. Much smaller than vine forms (25+ feet). Perfect for small gardens, patios, and containers.

When does the Blue Chinese Wisteria tree bloom?

  • Late spring (April-June) before leaves emerge. Cascading purple-to-blue flower clusters last 3-4 weeks. The dramatic show happens when branches are bare.

Does a wisteria tree need support or staking?

  • Yes, for the first 1-2 years. Stakes help support the heavy flower canopy while roots establish. Remove once the trunk thickens.

How do you keep a wisteria tree from turning back into a vine?

  • Prune 2-3 times per year. Summer and winter pruning prevent vine reversion. Without consistent pruning, it will return to vine form.

Are wisteria trees deer resistant and low maintenance?

  • Deer-resistant and disease-free, but needs annual pruning. Drought-tolerant once established. Main care: pruning and watering first year.

Blue Chinese Wisteria Tree

I have always wanted to take some Wisteria and turn it into a tree, but have had several failed attempts and was skeptical when I saw this one. But when I opened the box and saw how well it was packaged and how tall it was, and how healthy it was, I was literally blown away. It is doing very well, and I am super excited to watch it grow and help train it to be a beautiful specimen in my yard..
