Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Delivery and Shipping

Shipping

To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Once your order is placed, you will also receive the specific shipment time-frame information as part of your order confirmation. Once an item ships, you will receive shipment notification and tracking numbers, so you can follow along while your plant travels to your doorstep. We use FedEx, UPS, or USPS at our discretion.

Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

*If you have found your zone already, it will be highlighted in the table below.

Outstanding Blackgold® Sweet Cherry (Prunus avium 'Blackgold') produces delicious, dark red, heart-shaped fruit in the mid-season. It is a disease resistant, reliable producer each year, with fruit that is tolerant to rain cracking.

These special Sweet Cherries are considered self-pollinating, so you only need to add one to your backyard orchard. However, you'll achieve greater harvests with a pollination partner, such as Emperor Francis.

Planting and Application:

Blackgold is a reliable cultivar of Ridgewood Cherry that was introduced in New York state. It's well known for it's late bloom season and ability to withstand late spring frosts.

  • Enjoy the juicy, sweet cherries fresh off your tree or freeze them to enjoy in wintertime! You and your family will love their rich flavor and dark flesh packed with healthy antioxidants.
  • Prune them to a central leader, taking a few years to develop a scaffolding framework for proper air circulation and sunlight penetration. Many home gardeners also prune for size control in summer, for an easier harvest without ladders.
  • Modern Edible Landscapes put an emphasis on fruiting plants. With fragrant white blooms and glossy dark fruit, Blackgold Sweet Cherries make an attractive garden feature wherever you have full sun and well-drained soil.
  • Don't forget fruit trees in your Victory Garden! With summer pruning, it's easy to fit fruit trees and bushes as a backdrop to your annual and perennial veggies.
  • If you love sweet cherries, grow an early and a late-season variety along with your late mid-season Blackgold Cherry. Get more ideas for successive ripening and high-density planting techniques.

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Plant Blackgold Sweet Cherry trees in rich, well-drained soil with full sun where they will receive at least six hours of full sun. Maximize your investment with the symbiotic Nature Hills Root Booster formula added to your planting hole for life-long support of the tiny feeder roots.

  • Water consistently during fruit development. Find out the right way to water plants at the NatureHills.com Garden Blog.
  • Add a three-inch layer of mulch around the trunk, pulling it back away from directly touching the stems. Add high-quality fertilizer according to the label; or top-dress with compost in early spring.
  • In late winter, prune to shape while the trees are dormant. Tip prune in summer if you want to keep your tree smaller .
