The Bitter Gold Hops plant (Humulus lupulus 'Bitter Gold') is a super-alpha variety that features an alpha-acid percentage higher than any of its parents and higher even than Galena or Nugget which it is often compared to! Its heritage comes from Bullion, Brewer's Gold, Comet, and Fuggle. Used for bittering or addition of strong flavors of stone fruit, watermelon, and pear with excellent aroma capabilities.
Spring brings pleated green foliage and sprays of greenish flowers that the butterflies and bees seek out! The bines have little thorns that help them cling and grab as the tendrils form and fill out in lush leaves. By summer you'll see scaly little light green cones beginning to ripen.
Heat and cold hardy throughout USDA growing zones 4 to 8, Bitter Gold is a late-season ripening Hops variety that grows fast to about 15-20 feet in height and only spreads about 3-6 feet wide. Self-fertile, you'll get a large harvest of mid-sized cones for all your home-brewing needs! But consider planting more than one for a higher yield per plant and increased pollination. Bitter Gold can be used in Ales, Lages, Pilsners, and IPAs!
Planting and Application:
Bitter Gold Hops need a good sturdy support for fruit production. Train on wires or twine on a pole cemented into the ground. Hops also grow well on an arbor or fence making it ideal for double-duty ornamental landscaping!
Provide shade over the BBQ or a morning coffee nook, and screen off outdoor garden rooms by creating walls that shade and hide nosy neighbors! Hops grow fast, filling trellis and lattice quickly for maximum eyesore hiding and privacy!
The scaled, pinecone-like fruits are a lovely light green and add their own ornamental appeal to your fall landscape! Create an ornamental enclosure for your Victory Garden with these dual-purpose fruiting plants. You can even use these curious cones in your fresh or dried arrangements and wreaths!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Easy to grow Hops grow anew each spring from hardy perennial rhizomes. Hops bines are not vines, but do have short thorns to help with grabbing and clinging, but will need your help to climb. Secure the Bines clockwise around their support, and check them regularly.
Hops require full sun and very well-drained soil. If you need to improve the rate of drainage, elevate your planting with additional sandy loam. Provide a moderate amount of water on a regular schedule. Provide 3-4 inches of arborist mulch to help maintain the proper temperature and improve the soil quality over time.
Good Hops culture is designed to provide plenty of air circulation around each plant. Remove leaves from the lower few feet once the plant is 10 feet tall, and consider protective early treatments if powdery mildew is prevalent in your area. Boasting a disease-free growth habit, this plant is deer and pest-resistant!
