Pretty as a pink piglet in ruffles and bows, the Pink Dragonfly Bergenia (Bergenia 'Pink Dragonfly') has shiny cabbage-like leaves that have an unusually thick rubbery feel! In fact, they make a pig squeak sound when you rub them between your fingers - giving them their common name Pigsqueak! These attractive large succulent round leaves are dark green with red undersides and are just the beginning of the fantastic perks that await you with this lovely perennial!
Pink Dragonfly is a low-growing, clumping and spreading perennial that can remain semi-to-fully evergreen throughout mild winter climates! Not too many other Perennials can boast that!
But early spring has its own reason to love Pig Squeaks when reddish stems appear and become festooned in clusters of bright, tubular pink flowers with darker pink centers on 15-inch tall stems! Loved by bees and butterflies, the blossoms last for a long time, sometimes until early summer! The flowers provide a lovely fragrance and are ideal as cut blooms for bouquets or floral arrangements!
While the blooms attract hummingbirds and butterflies, they are resistant to deer and rabbits, so nothing can harm their endless beauty! The 8-inch high paddle-like foliage earned these Perennials the name Elephant's Ears in many parts of the world! The leaves remain green through the growing season and turn a reddish-bronze hue in the fall, sometimes even becoming red, to plum or even purple-black all fall and winter!
Planting and Application:
Use Pink Dragonfly as a lush flowering groundcover to fill in the blank spaces throughout the shaded landscape! Not one to interfere with their neighbors, Bergenia are politely spreading living mulch and mindful neighbors. Not minding the shade of larger shrubs or trees, Pigsqueak is a fantastic underplanting! Great as landscape bed edging and for planted along walkways and paths!
Add wonderful color to small space gardens, Cottage borders, and urban courtyards alike! These are showy as specimen plants when in bloom or not and work beautifully in a container garden or mixed planter!
The spreading rhizomes hold the earth and make Bergenia great for slowing bank erosion and for filling hard-to-mow slopes! The Bergenia is certainly for gardeners who are looking for multiple seasons of interest, and fresh spring color, while feeding pollinators and filling their vases indoors!
- Bright Pink Blooms All Spring
- Glossy Thick Green Foliage & Red Undersides
- Foliage Turns Red/Bronze in Autumn

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Bergenia prefers part sun in humus-rich, moist, well-drained soils, and can adapt to a variety of sun and soil conditions. They dislike hot, dry conditions. Add a 3-4 inch layer of arborist bark chip mulch and maintain average consistent moisture throughout the growing season. In warm climates, it's recommended you give them a good fall watering as well.
Deadhead the blooms once they're spent and prune the entire plant in the early spring. It's important to remove dead leaves and debris to keep slugs and snails at bay. These foliage mounds are easily divided in spring or early fall.
- Prefers Partial Shade Conditions
- Adaptable To Most Well-Drained Soil Types
- Moderate Moisture Access
- Clean Mounds In Early Spring
- Deer & Rabbit Resistant
Don't miss out on this easy, low-maintenance plant. Add Pig Squeak to your landscape and you will never be bored! You will be glad you ordered your Pink Dragonfly Bergenia today from the experts at Nature Hills!
