Plant Sentry™
Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.
This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Stunning color transformation throughout the seasons! The Golden Ruby® Barberry bush PP#16,203 (Berberis thunbergii 'Goruzam') is a standout ornamental shrub! It has spring foliage that emerges a striking fluorescent orange, then its leaves mature to a burgundy maroon for the summer! Each tiny teardrop-shaped leaf has a gold ring around the outer leaf margin!
Tiny yellow spring blossoms will feed your bees even if you don't notice them, and birds will go gaga for the small fruit in the late summer to autumn months. Then Golden Ruby® has one last wardrobe change to surprise you - when its fall color becomes a flame orange to brick red!
All this color is packed into a tiny 15-inch tall deciduous shrub that will amaze you! Hardy throughout USDA planting zones 4 to 9, Golden Ruby® Barberry can spread to about 2 feet wide when mature. Barberry are great low-maintenance shrubs that are seldom bothered by deer, largely disease and pest-resistant, and so easy to grow! Plus they are fantastic for small urban lots and easily stand up to pollution.
Landscape Application:
Golden Ruby®'s bold color combination adds drama to the garden, especially when paired against more subdued landscape plantings and plants with dark foliage! Spice up that weary foundation hedge with this dwarf Barberry or wake up a tired evergreen hedge! Golden Ruby® is small and space-saving, acting as a brilliant facer plant to hide its bare leggy lower stems!
Try using these low-growing shrubs as edging that tames wayward foot traffic, keeping everyone on the sidewalk, or pathway, or from cutting through your garden because of their sharp thorns! Just plant them a safe distance away from high-traffic areas to avoid snagging clothing.
A great low-barrier plant, use Golden Ruby® in combination with other thorny plants and larger Barberry to add an extra layer of security beneath first-story windows or around the pool to stop trespassers in their tracks. They are a great barrier to keep the pets out of your garden beds and vegetable patch too! However, birds and wildlife enjoy these shrubs!
Golden Ruby® Barberry is small enough and forms a tidy, colorful accent that looks great in mixed and single specimen planters and large containers! Add some unusual texture and color to porches and patios, or even around a deck or balcony in the sun!
- Bright Orange Spring Leaves Mature Burgundy & Maroon

#ProPlantTips for Care:
This Barberry will have the best coloration in full sun but in hotter climates will appreciate some afternoon shade. Adaptable to any type of well-drained soil, plant your shrubs with Nature Hills Root Booster, choosing a slightly acidic location. Set up a consistent watering schedule for new plants by using the Finger Test to make sure you don't let new installations dry out. Once established Barberry is quite drought-tolerant! Provide a 3-4 inch layer of arborist bark mulch to protect the top of the roots. You can let it grow freely or prune or shear after flowering in the spring.
- Great Color In Full Sun
- Moderate Moisture & Acidic Well-Drained Soil
- Prune After Flowering If Needed
- Deer & Drought Tolerant
- Low-Maintenance & Pollution-Tolerant
While Golden Ruby® rarely produces seedlings and has viable seeds, sometimes Barberry Bushes perform a bit too well in some areas and NatureHills.com is restricted from shipping into these areas, however, they may not be invasive in all areas and that is why we can sell them to those regions. So Nature Hills has taken the initiative to develop our own compliance company called Plant Sentry™, preventing the purchase of this plant if your state has prohibited it.
We have a full-time compliance officer who keeps those state restrictions current and up to date at all times. We are the only nursery selling plants online that are fully compliant with each state's agricultural laws and protect your environment from invasive species.
Find out if you can safely include these colorful shrubs in your landscape by typing in your zip code in our Hardiness Zone Finder, located above the Plant Highlights to find out, or contact your local County Extension Office for more information. If you can enjoy this brilliant, color-changing shrub, hurry and order your Golden Ruby® Dwarf Barberry today and add some jewel tones to your landscape! Now at NatureHills.com!
