Now, this is a modern Japanese Barberry!
Beautiful Concorde Barberry (Berberis thunbergii 'Concorde') makes a perfect, tiny accent shrub. Deliciously dark purple foliage provides a dramatic contrast to the everyday, hum-drum green of other plants.
Pretty, teardrop-shaped leaves emerge in spring bright red, then turn an amazing royal grape-purple color for the summer! Then the leaves intensify into deep red in the fall!
The nice, rounded shape stays small, and very rarely needs pruning. There is always space for the natural dwarf Concorde in any landscape!
Concorde will produce yellow spring flowers (much to the delight of all your bees and butterflies) followed by sparsely produced small red berries. The beauty of this plant is the berries are not considered viable so the plant is not on the invasive list!
It is the answer for Barberry plants!
Beautifully colorful red new growth turns dark purple for the entire growing season. The plant is easily maintained in that 2-3 foot range, throughout USDA planting zones 4 to 8. Not sure if you can grow this unique Barberry selection? Just enter your zip code above the Plant Highlights section of this product page. Not to worry if you are unsure if your area can enjoy these plants, because NatureHills.com uses Plant Sentry™! Or contact your local County Extension Office to learn more. Landscape Application:
The compact size and juicy purple hue of Concorde sterile Barberry bushes are so easy to incorporate into your foundation planting or to edge the side of a garden border planting. Use evenly spaced dwarf Barberry as a short, colorful hedge to punch up the visual impact of existing evergreens.
Barberry Bushes do have thorns, so plant them at least 2 feet away from the sidewalk. This will allow for their mature spread while preventing any snags to clothing.
Repeat them in the front of any planting beds for fabulous color. Add them as an intensely colorful Thriller to large containers. Or, use it as a colorful replacement for Boxwood to set off a garden bed filled with blooming summer annuals!
Live on a corner lot? Include a low hedge of Concord Barberry to stop people from cutting across your lawn. Place it anywhere you want a friendly, colorful way to direct traffic through your landscape!
Gardens in deer country appreciate this plant's resistance to browsing. Many people plant this shrub as a barrier plant to discourage deer from grazing in their garden beds, making it harder to reach the tastier plants behind a row of Concord Barberry!
These easy-care shrubs are great in commercial landscapes, too. Let them draw the eye and grab attention wherever they are used!
Create a solid, low hedge by planting them 18 inches apart on center. You'll measure from the center of one to the center of the next plant. Fill a wide, open area with a mass planting of pest-free Concorde Barberry. Use zigzagging, staggered rows of plants 18 inches apart on center. Mulch between plants and keep new mass plantings weeded until the plants grow together and touch.
- Velvety, Maroon Purple Foliage
- Incredible Color All Through the Growing Season
- Small Yellow Flowers
- Compact, Rounded Shrub
- Perfect Low Hedge or Mass Planting, Barrier & Border Planting
- Considered Non-Invasive
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Provide a spot in full sun and Barberry need well-drained soil for best results. The color will not be as vivid in partially shaded locations. Plant in a well-drained location that is slightly acidic. Use a fertilizer formula for acid-loving plants according to label directions. Moderate applications of water regularly will benefit this slow-growing, pest-free shrub and keep it stress-free. Please baby it a bit as a new plant and do not let new shrub installations dry out!
Pruning is only required to change its shape or overall size. Wear thick, leather gloves before working with Barberry. Once the bees have had their fill of the flowers in the spring, you can then shear or prune as needed. Want a more naturally shaped shrub? Try renewal pruning every 3-5 years instead.
Add a thick layer of pine bark or pine straw mulch over the root system to keep it cool. Pull the mulch back from the main stems by 6 inches for good air circulation.
In deer country, use Deer Repellent Spray on every single new planting from day one. Reapply according to the directions through the growing season.
- Best Color In Full Sun (Some Part Shade In Hot Climates)
- Needs Well-Drained Soil
- Moderate to Low Moisture - Drought Tolerant Once Established
- Prune Spring After First Flush Of Color/Flowers
- Deer, Drought & Disease Resistant
- Sterile Selection - Does Not Produce Viable Seed
All the color, none of the concern! You'll love the outstanding color of Concorde Dwarf Japanese Barberry. Order from Nature Hills today, and you will enjoy many years of high performance for very little effort in return!
