#ProPlantTips For Care
Rhododendrons and Azaleas will tolerate full sun, especially up north. However, they'll grow best in partial shade. Although they thrive in cooler regions, it's a good idea to give them protection from the worst of the strong winter winds. However, you don't want to crowd them, as they do need good air circulation. Well-drained soil is a must. Ensure their roots have life-long symbiotic support with Nature Hills Root Booster used during planting. Remember not to plant these shallow-rooted plants too deeply. Mound them up in a hill of extra soil; leaving an inch or two of the root ball showing.
Mulch well and avoid disturbing its roots (which remain very near the surface), fertilize twice a year with an acid-loving formula, and water well throughout the growth period. Prune to shape and open the interior immediately after flowering and ever prune after mid-summer because those branches produce the next season's flowers.
- Plant in Full Sun & Partial Shade
- Moderate Moisture & Enriched Well-Drained Soil

Azalea and Rhododendron Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the best place to plant an Azaleas?
Azaleas and Rhododendrons prefer partial shade (both dappled shade all day or morning sun with afternoon shade). Plant in a slightly acidic, consistently moist, enriched, and well-drained soil location for best results. Their shallow roots dislike soggy soil but thrive with a 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch over their surface.
How big does Azaleas get?
Golden Lights Azalea can grow around 6 feet in height and 3-4 feet in width when grown in optimal conditions.
Are Azaleas low maintenance?
Azalea and Rhododendron shrubs are very easy to grow and low maintenance. Water during drought, prune only after flowering and fertilize with an acid-loving organic, slow-release flowering plant fertilizer.
What is the difference between Rhododendrons and Azaleas?
All Azaleas are Rhododendrons but not all Rhododendrons are Azaleas. Azalea tend to be smaller-sized with smaller leaves and stems, while Rhododendrons can be larger with stout branching and larger bloom trusses. There can both be either deciduous or broad-leaved evergreens.
