Four-season of vibrant color! The Encore® Autumn Carnation® Azalea, (Rhododendron 'Roblec'), is known for its repeating blooms, sun tolerance! and fall color! Just as the name implies, Encore® Azaleas are delightful in the spring, reblooming in the summer, then again in the autumn, and still showy and going strong in the cooler months! However, it also packs a lot of color and charm into its small stature from spring through summer!

The show begins with a heavy bloom of double flowers that resemble carnations! Each bloom spans nearly 3 inches, and their layered petals of pink perfection are an eye-popping asset for your yard! Autumn Carnation's® ruffled pink flowers are a perfect complement to the glossy foliage that is deep green for spring and summer, but then transforms into resplendent shades of purple for fall!

Encore® Autumn Carnation® Azalea has an upright habit and is more sun tolerant than some other Azalea varieties. Autumn Carnation® also has some cold tolerance and will do well throughout USDA growing zones 6 to 9, growing quickly to a 4-5 foot tall and 3-4 foot wide easy-to-grow rounded shrub!

Planting and Application:

Wildlife loves Autumn Carnation®, so you'll be sure to draw pollinators to your yard including the always lovely Hummingbirds and butterflies!

#ProPlantTips For Care

Azaleas appreciate full sun in cooler growing zones, but filtered sunlight is also ideal, but morning sunlight is best to dry the leaves of dew. Protection from the afternoon sun may also be given by fences, shrubbery, or screens. The roots of Rhododendrons and Azaleas are very delicate and unable to penetrate heavy or rocky soils, so loose, enriched and highly organic soil with excellent drainage is important! Azaleas love cool, moist, slightly acidic garden soil that is high in organic matter. Use pine bark/pine straw mulch to add acidity and improve your soil over time. Provide a moderate amount of water on a regular basis. Keep containers watered by setting them on a drip irrigation system to keep it easy for yourself.

When planting Azaleas in the ground, it's better to plant too high, than too low. Mound up when planting by leaving a few inches of the root ball showing above the ground. Pull pine bark or pine straw mulch up to cover the root system. Plan to reapply a mulch layer each year.

If your soil is high pH alkaline, or doesn't drain well, you can grow Autumn Carnation® Azalea in pretty planters. Ensure there are several drainage holes, and plant them in an Acid Lovers potting soil mix.

Right after the spring bloom is past, give your plants a light trim to encourage new flowers and correct shape, as needed. Avoid any major summer or fall pruning, or you will remove next year's spring flowers. Weed your plantings regularly, as the shallow roots won't like the competition. Apply a good, organic, slow-release Acid Lovers fertilizer in early spring according to the product directions.

  • Tolerates Full Sun, Prefers Part Shade
  • Acidic Well-Drained Soil
  • Moderate Moisture & Mulched Beds
  • Easy-Care, Vigorous Flowering Shrub
  • Prune Immediately After Spring Flowers Fade

Azalea and Rhododendron Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the best place to plant an Azalea bush?

Azaleas and Rhododendrons prefer partial shade (both dappled shade all day or morning sun with afternoon shade). Plant in a slightly acidic, consistently moist, enriched and well-drained soil location for best results. Their shallow roots dislike soggy soil but thrive with a 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch over their surface.

How big does an Azalea bush get?

Encore® Autumn Carnation® Azalea can grow to around 4-5 feet in height and a bit smaller in width in optimal conditions.

Are Azalea bushes low maintenance?

Azalea and Rhododendron shrubs are very easy to grow and low maintenance. Water during drought, prune only after flowering and fertilize with an acid-loving organic, slow-release flowering plant fertilizer.

What is the difference between Rhododendrons and Azaleas?

All Azaleas are Rhododendrons but not all Rhodondendrons are Azaleas. Azalea tends to be smaller-sized with smaller leaves and stems, while Rhododendrons can be larger with stout branching and larger bloom trusses. There can both be either deciduous or broad-leaved evergreens.
