Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Shipping

To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Once your order is placed, you will also receive the specific shipment time-frame information as part of your order confirmation. Once an item ships, you will receive shipment notification and tracking numbers, so you can follow along while your plant travels to your doorstep. We use FedEx, UPS, or USPS at our discretion.

Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

The National Audubon Society presents a new line of native plants and trees that helps birds and wildlife thrive in your area! You may not have heard of the Audubon® Native Wafer Ash (Ptelea trifoliata), also known as the Common Hop Tree, but you’ll be glad to learn about this hardy native shrubby tree!

Spring flowers appear as small, greenish-white clusters of winged seeds, adding color contrast among the dark green foliage that turns a pleasing yellow in fall. Members of the Rue and Citrus family, it has a slightly citrusy, musky or skunky smell when crushed.

Called the Hop tree because early American brewers used the fruit as a substitute for hops when brewing beer. However, these persistent papery wafers dangle until eaten by birds and squirrels, that will adore you for planting this wonderful Native Plant!

Planting and Application:

The Wafer Ash is a handsome, shiny-leaved shrub ideal for borders! Its thorns can be daunting and its natural growth habit scraggly, but as a manicured landscaping plant, it makes a good hedgerow and barrier planting for privacy and deterring trespassers - both 2 and 4 legged!

With a touch of pruning, you can sculpt this into a small tree. Either way, your backyard songbirds will find its thorny, dense branching the perfect haven to roost, nest and forage for food. You’ll find Cardinal, Grosbeak, Wren, Sparrow, Thrush, Orioles, Finch, Mockingbird, Thrasher, Vireo and more, fluttering through its branches.

  • Butterfly Nectar Source - Vital Resource for Pollinators.
  • Shiny Scented Foliage & Dense Thorny Growth
  • Supports Migratory & Local Bird Populations
  • Caterpillar Host Plant - Eastern Tiger & Giant Swallowtail Butterfly Larvae

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Ash Trees grow equally well in full sun or shade, which makes it an ideal understory tree. Tolerant of a wide array of soil types and hardy from zones 3-9.

  • Drought-Tolerant
  • Slow-Growing - Won’t Overpower
  • Rocky & Gravel Soil, Clay, Sand, Acidic or Alkaline pH
