Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

The National Audubon Society presents a new line of native plants and trees that helps birds and wildlife thrive in your area! Beautiful eastern U.S. native Audubon® Native Sweet Birch (Betula lenta) features brownish-black scaly bark and reddish-brown stems. Also known as the Black Birch, Cherry Birch or Mahogany Birch due to the resemblance the bark has to Cherry trees. The oldest has been confirmed as 368 years old!

The fresh green foliage is decorated by pendulous male and female catkins, with the female fruit maturing in fall. The twigs, when scraped, have a strong scent of wintergreen, giving it another common name of Spice Birch. The bark doesn’t take on the traditional peeling appearance until trees are much more mature.

These trees can be tapped in a similar fashion as Maples and can be boiled the same as maple sap, but its syrup is stronger in flavor. It can also be used to make birch beer.

Planting and Application:

Light and airy, Sweet Birch lends dappled shade to the landscape and are incredibly ornamental specimens. Great when bunched in groups of 3 or 5 for a naturalized look, or plant a single tree as a fantastic front yard accent or anchor for your foundation plantings.

Bird-Friendly, the buds, blooms, and seeds support songbirds and numerous insects, which Insect-eating birds feast on and also feed their hungry chicks. Attracts a wide variety of bird species, pollinators, game birds and small mammals that use this tree as nesting, shelter and food!

  • Beneficial Native Keystone Species
  • Caterpillar Host Plant - Comma & Other Butterflies & Many Moth Species
