Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Delivery and Shipping

Shipping

To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Once your order is placed, you will also receive the specific shipment time-frame information as part of your order confirmation. Once an item ships, you will receive shipment notification and tracking numbers, so you can follow along while your plant travels to your doorstep. We use FedEx, UPS, or USPS at our discretion.

Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

*If you have found your zone already, it will be highlighted in the table below.

The National Audubon Society presents a new line of native plants that helps birds and wildlife thrive in your area! Tasty treats and cooling shade, the Audubon® Native Shellbark Hickory Tree (Carya laciniosa) is a noble native shade tree that attracts and supports over 200 different species of butterflies and moths as food for their caterpillars!

Don’t worry, you’ll still have some leaves left when they’re done! These larvae become food for insect-eating birds and their ravenous chicks! The strong limbs and great shade are perfect for nesting birds too! Large leaves with 5 leaflets have a hairy saw-tooth margin and pointed tips for great texture!

Distinct shaggy bark straight, slender trunk and narrow, oblong crown is bedecked in yellow-green spring catkins on male trees and insignificant green flowers on the female trees. You’ll get a great crop every year from these wind-pollinated trees! The nuts ripen in fall just as the foliage turns into a luscious yellow and brown hue!

Planting and Application:

Shellbark Hickory look wonderful as specimen trees and as windbreak plantings that will stand the test of time and mother nature. Plant in areas that occasionally flood without worry. Create lush shade and wildlife habitat by planting in informal groups and rows of shelterbelts.

It isn’t just your birds and wildlife that will enjoy this tree. Add to your Nut tree orchard so that you too can enjoy the delicious nuts, shade and wildlife these vital keystone species support!
